Ask a (Former) Hermes Delivery manager anything
Discussion
worked as a delivery manager for Hermes (Now Evri for just shy of 2 years across lockdown before going back to my own business.
have to say i saw many interesting sites met lots of interesting people and some of the most "unusual practices" you can imagine.
thought it might be interesting to share some information and dispell some myths along the way
Ask me anything

This - I’ve had stuff refunded because it went missing whilst in Evri’s care - it can’t all be falling down the back of the racking in some van surely so where is it going?
lots of parcels are damanged in transit, our regional depot had a full time team of people to sort damaged in transit parcels
those that could be repackaged were bagged up and sent on their way to the client
those that were damaged beyond repair or could not be identified off to auction

If you were ceo how would you change the company?
quite simple, pay the couriers a decent rate and stop the race to the bottom, even an extra 15p a parcel would see a vast improvement in courier earnings and make it a desirable role in the industry rather than driving rates into the ground
service HAS to come before price and hermes(Evri are engaged in a frightening case of chase of volume at all costs and to hell with the QOS)

where does all the missing parcels go ?
what measures are in place to stop theft
missing parcels answered above - mostly damaged but a fair bit with loss preventionwhat measures are in place to stop theft
Hermes actually have their own loss prevention team who are by far and away superb albeit vastly underresourced and were tasked with covid audits over the past few years rather than actual loss prevention.
without name dropping the guy that covers central Scotland where i worked was one of the most professional people i've ever worked with and had an absolute passion for the job that i've very rarely seen anywhere. Absolute fantastic guy to work with and one of the people that i would happily work with anywhere.

Depressing we (all of us) can't be arsed to make it happen by paying a bit extra for decent service. pay the couriers a decent rate and stop the race to the bottom, even an extra 15p a parcel would see a vast improvement in courier earnings and make it a desirable role in the industry rather than driving rates into the ground

I'd happily pay an extra 50p/1£ a parcel to help things get better.

surprisingly the QOS is rather good but tends to fall flat when its busy (aka peak(as in this time of year)I'd happily pay an extra 50p/1£ a parcel to help things get better.
my 3 depots were all hitting 99.7/99.8% of parcels going out next day regardless of next day 2 day or 3 day service.
top tip Hermes dont distinquish between next day and 2 day service for couriers, they expect everything to go out the day it hits the delivery unit regardless of what it is.
where it tends to fall apart is this time of year when volumes absolutely swell and you generate a backlog of parcels. you'll get couriers to move it all easily enough but its rare that regional managers will greenlight extra payments unless their under pressure from higher ups and only then if theres a risk of parcels going into claim (ie been sitting in a depot that long their being reported missing.
