Your Spotify 2022 review
Discussion
So just had my top listened to songs and artists of ‘22 pop up on Spotify.
Couple of surprises but the number one for both song and artist aren’t a surprise as I love that song and his music in general. Oh and he’s a fellow Geordie.
I listened to 25,713 minutes of music. Podcasts extra.
Top 5 artists of 2022 -
1) Sam Fender
2) U2
3) Gerry Cinnamon
4) Travelling Wilburys.
5) The Cure.
Top 10 songs of 2022 -
1) Sam Fender - 17 going under (played 54 times).
2) Sam Fender - Hypersonic missiles.
3) Travelling Willburys - End of the line.
4) Sam Fender - Poundshop Kardashians.
5) Sundara Karma - Explore.
6) Editors - An end has a start.
7) The Heavy - Short change hero.
8) Sam Fender - You’re not the only one.
9) Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
10) Bombay Bicycle Club - Eat, sleep, wake.
Number 3 is a surprise as I didn’t think I’d played it loads but I do (did) love Tom Petty and also the TW’s.
Number 5 too isn’t a song I think of as playing loads and not a band I’m hugely into.
So come on, what’s yours?
Give me some inspiration. I’m an indie kid at heart plus old school hip hop. I love A tribe called quest.
Post as many or as few as you like….

From your time listened you must listen whilst working or driving a lot? From the list, I know only two names, U2 and the Cure. I know some old U2 songs which I like, and new songs which I don't. The three songs I've heard by the Cure I thought were cool, and Robert Smith seems a cool enough old dude. I'm guessing it's a generational thing, I'm 33.
31,483 minutes listened for me, split 70/30 - music/podcasts. The retro bug hit me bigger this year, and Synthwave has Knocked Metal off the top. But tens of genres, hundreds of artists, and somehow Backstreet boys made it into my top 5, which is surprising

Not for the first time, I'm not convinced by mine. There was a year when Spotify told me that Yes by Mcalmont and Butler was my favourite song, even though I'd never specifically played it. Not even once. It was on the playlist I listened to every morning on shuffle though.
The algorithm's gonna get you.
I listened to 38,000 minutes, but a significant proportion of that was my big playlists on shuffle, song radio or Spotify generated playlists.
This year it's even less accurate. My supposed top two songs this year - Default by Django Django and (ironically) Shuffle by Bombay Bicycle Club, I didn't ever specifically choose to listen to. They're both on my main playlist, but I didn't add them this year. My top artist was apparently Deacon Blue. Now, I went through a week of being mildly obsessed by Raintown, but apparently my top Deacon Blue song was Dignity, which I don't like that much and is certainly overplayed - again I doubt I ever clicked on that once.
So I think Spotify is basically telling me which songs it decided I would like best this year, which is much less interesting. You'd think they'd be able to tell the difference between songs you actually chose and songs they chose for you.
Fwiw
1. Deacon Blue
2. Lorde
3. James
4. Warren Zevon
5. Robyn
1. Default
2. Shuffle
3. Malibu - Miley Cyrus
4. Call your girlfriend - Robyn
5. Green light - Lorde

Screenshots, why didn’t I think of that?

Great mix of bands there so far. Plenty I’ve heard of and a few I haven’t, so some new stuff for me to check out.
Gotta love that Back Street Boys entry.
Funny seeing Radiohead as they don’t register at all on my lists yet they’re probably my favourite band of all time. I’ve seen them live 5 times, everywhere from Oxford (their homecoming gig) to Porto in Portugal.
Good to see Warren Zevon pop up. He popped up on a playlist of mine after listening to The Faces and Tom Petty. I’d never heard of him before that.
I like Lawyers, Guns and Money.
As for podcasts I’ll check out some of the above as I often sicken myself of the same old stuff, even though my top two are hilarious.

Favourite songs for me this week -
Tom Petty - Time to move on.
Badly Drawn Boy - All Possibilities. (I loved Once around the block when it was out too).

That’s a good point. A few songs pop up a lot for me that I pretty much always skip. I also often select a band and then “radio” as it’s a good way of finding new similar stuff.
To be fair to Spotify in my case, most of the songs on my top songs list, I have clicked “like” on and played a lot. So this year it is pretty accurate for me.
