What did you expect from the CCP? They have previous and look how they control their population.

They’re editing crowd footage at the World Cup after citizens saw fans not wearing masks, only wide angle now on a delay. I hope we might be witnessing the start of something dramatic, the protests are widespread now and if they can build momentum who knows.

Unfortunately, the Chinese regime will be brutal and thorough if necessary in silencing the protestors. Don't expect any great changes in China for quite a while.

The difference now is that lockdown is a single, clear and unambiguous issue, that large swathes of the population across the country are reacting to.

Expecting a violent crackdown at a guess... maybe curfews.

edit: I don't post many sources (or much in NP&E) so you may have me mixed up with another poster.

Hopefully this helps the western press love affair with China come to an end.

For far too long, we in the West have had a bafflingly one-eyed view of China.

Time we properly appraise all of our trade partners. Consider also the CO2 per mile of all products perhaps?

Agreed. We were all happy to turn a blind eye to Russia and China whilst we hoovered up their cheap exports. Now we realise these regimes do not want to be our friends and their motives and values are not only alien to our way of life but also utterly reprehensible.

Russia's implosion has been extraordinary to observe. China will be a tougher nut to crack.

Couldn’t agree more, but weaning ourselves off Russian gas is a walk in the park by comparison I fear.

Not just the press either, just look at how corporations such as Disney grovel to them.

It would take decades to move away from China.

e.g. Reducing Apple’s dependence on China by just 10% would take eight years – Bloomberg

And everyone in the west turns a blind eye and keeps buying loads of goods made in China.

That would be the same BBC that was quite happy reporting all the negative numbers on Covid that it could find, in order to support the lockdowns in the UK, and didn't ever question whether the lockdowns were needed or working?

I feel sorry for the individual, but practically I see China today as what in 2020 many in the BBC were hoping the UK would become.

There were plenty of people gushing about how if only the UK lockdown had been harder/faster/longer like China then there wouldn't be any Covid. And the police had to be pulled back when they got to the "we will inspect people's shopping" stage.

I hope the zero-covid zealots see this and think hard about what they were demanding.

In a bizzare way we need to be dependent via trade.

If they didn't rely on the US, Europe, etc for their economy they might get seriously expansionist ideas, starting with Taiwan and Siberia.

Not everyone ... it's a very low base and growing very slowly but there are people doing the hard thing and avoiding as much ecomomic interaction with China as is possible.

Eventually that will potentially change if there is some seismic event (invading Taiwan? Inescapable proof of aggressive hacking?) that drives governments to start making hard decisions. But the west's ability to turn a blind eye should never be underestimated ...
