After having mostly smaller, or impractical cars, I'm hankering for an estate.
I don't need to carry lots of stuff all that often, but I've never had one and so I want one.

It'll be my only car and daily driver just for a 10 mile commute, so I'd assume diesel is out. Mostly just town driving - I boot it one junction down the motorway is all.

Roughly £6k max.
I'm not overly keen on the sensible Peugeot, Astra, Focus offerings etc and have been looking at the likes of Jag X-Type, MG ZT-T, Subaru Legacy, Citroen C5 etc. Something slightly different I guess.

Are there any good suggestions that I'm missing?

I'm 28, so maybe it's illegal to be driving a Jag with a walnut dash, or a chunky old Volvo, but I like them all the same biggrin

Cheers

There's a decent looking Lexus IS300 SportCross on the trader at the moment

I had a petrol Octavia VRS for the same reason which I very much enjoyed.

Volvo XC70, can't recommend them highly enough. If you don't need a haldex 4wheel drive, a V70. 2.4D 5 cyl is a lovely engine.

Yep. That budget should get you into a nice 330i. Preferably pre-facelift as that will have the hydraulic PAS. Or it will get you into a less than perfect one but with budget to refresh suspension etc., which is well worth doing if it hasn't been already.

I had that same weird desire in 2018 so I bought a 2006 BMW E91 325i for just under £3,000. Being an early one it had the N52 engine and HPAS.

It ticked the estate box but I found it a bit lethargic so after a year I tried again and spent a bit more on a 2005 330i, but the compromise was it was an E90 (so Saloon).

Plenty of choices around, and every now and again and estate car is really handy.

Your original choices sound good, diesel wouldn't be an issue, I do less in my diesel Mondeo

I would add the ST220 to your list and the Saab 9-5.

Mg-zt got to be getting rare to find now? Including finding parts for them. Nice cars though

I would personally avoid an N53 powered BMW. I've found the hard way they have expensive tastes in injectors, plus an engine not running perfectly won't ever get the quoted mpg.

Plus, don't go for an 25i model - hold out for a 30i, as the power /efficiency trade off just doesn't make sense imo.
BMWs have some upsides though, is very rust resistant, and generally speak/rattle free.

That's why both of mine had the N52 engine!

A colleague had the ZT-T estate and it was a comfortable place to munch the miles taking three of us together with mountain bikes and luggage in the back, it handled surprisingly well too. A fine looking car in metallic blue.

I'm in a very similar boat, pretty much identical situation, so following with interest.

I'll soon have a 18 mile partly motorway commute, so torn between petrol and diesel. With the current disparity in petrol and diesel on the forecourts, I'm struggling to get diesel to make financial sense.
