Suitable tyres

I have had a much loved MX5, Series 2, (1999) for the past 20 years. It is fitted with Avon ZV5 195/50R 15s.
A recent puncture resulted in a shredded tyre, - alas, I couldn't immediately stop, - and I'm trying to get a replacement but they are no longer made.
Avons now make a ZV7 195/50R15 which is presumably the replacement.

The question is, should I simply get one or else replace both tyres on the axle. Any tyre Gurus out there who might have some ideas? Many years ago, it was fitted with Yokohamas and I replaced the tyres on the front axle with Pirellis which made the car most unpleasant to handle. I cant remember how it was all resolved., probably by replacing all four. An expensive exercise but the others were quite worn so not too bad. Understandably, I'm a bit nervous about choices especially as all tyres (except one!) are in reasonable nick.

I'd worry more about how old the tyres are tbh. In mx-5 sizes I think Dunlop fast response or a variant of them get good reviews

I'd always try and have the same brand and tyre across both axles. I've always found Avon to be very much a bottom of the mid range tyre. For slightly more money there are much much better tyres out there.

ZV7s are the control tyre in the BRSCC MX5 Championship - they are a decent enough tyre, that said on the other MX5 I use Michelin PS3 (ex Ginetta) which I really rate.

Depends what your use case is of course.

I have just fitted a set of Hankook Ventus 127s on my NC.

Very pleased with them. Better ride and lower noise than the ling long ditch finders fitted when I bought the car. They did seem to grip OK but the rear ones were badly cracked.

Best tyres you will get for the price.

They are from the Ginetta race cars, so might have done a few laps, but at least they are already scrubbed in.

MPS3's especially if you can obtain ex-Ginetta ones.
They're a bargain as only used for practise laps then changed.
In terms of grip, especially in the wet, they're outstanding.
On one track day at Combe surface was a black sheet but the tyres had more grip than I had balls!
