Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing.
10 years. Where has my life gone?
I had just learnt to spell his name correctly... & then he goes & retires. 10 years. Where has my life gone?
Love this though;

I found him rude, boring and pretty bland.
He was great in the car but was literally as dull as paint even after years of being int he sport.
Some people like that, I just found him disrespectful, rude, and completely not a person who should be promoting anything. A few ride comments to his team personnel over a radio do not make him funny. Not to me anyway
I guess it works sometimes, but I think there are far better examples
he was also a drunk at times, which again some might find funny, but i just found, again very unbbefitting of a man earning so much money and in such a position.
You can be a funny guy without being like Kimi

He was actually very good at doing publicity stuff. Not the TV stuff, but the private stuff for sponsor's corporate events.
Which is the opposite experience I had when I met alonso at a corporate event. He couldn’t have been less enthused to give more than a moment to those that helped pay his way. Gazzab said:

Bland character? I think you have confused him with someone else. He was the least bland of the drivers.
If you can explain why his character is so scintillating I will wait. Judge a guy - or a girl- mainly by their driving. I saw Raikkonen win in Formula Renault and he looked pretty special . He turned out to be just that , an extraordinarily exciting driver , especially in his McLaren years . But later , he turned into a quick bed blocker , with none of the sheer speed of his youth , and he should have left years before he did . Out of the cockpit he seemed to me to be charmless , rude and crass - and this appealed to a fevered fan base. God knows why .
I was at a corporate do where Senna and Berger were to answer questions from the select, and me, crowd.
It was as if their roles had been reversed. Senna, while not bouncing around with excitement, did, at least, answer questions fully, and expand on them a couple of time. He was interesting and enlightening, although said little about himself or emotions.
Berger was monosyllabic, rude, patronising and an all-round pain. He dismissed a boy's question as pointless.
I went right off him after that. Well, during that in fact.
I thought Kimi a great driver in his early days. Thrilling to watch. I saw an overtake of his once that came out of nowhere although he'd been working up to it for three or four laps. Had everyone cheering. But out of the car he lacked any interest. Always worth watching though.

Sums up my feelings exactly. I seem to remember McLaren never quite knew which Kimi was turning up from race to race but when he was on it if the car held together he was pretty much untouchable. His best legacy was making Coulthard look very average !Milkyway said:
I am not convinced they are that similar to be honest. James could turn on the charm and be extremely insightful and engaging, something that escapes Kimi. I am not saying that Kimi left me cold as his gesture to the kid that was devastated by his first lap collision showed a wonderful side to him. Just that most of the time he was curt, abrasive and seemingly disinterested in his surroundings. Hunt, in comparison, was passionate. He is, by all accounts, much less dour when he's not putting on his PR face. I think it's just a mechanism for dealing with the media. Drivers get a lot of judgement from the public from how they interact with the media (see how much stick Hamilton gets), and I don't blame him for opting out of it.
To be honest, for the first half of his career I didn't like him at all, but towards the end of his career i started to 'get' him. My 10 year old daughter used to think he was extremely funny and was sad to see him leave.
You can still be funny without cracking a joke every 5 minutes.
I thinks its just a the case that people loved his 'don't give a fk' attitude, more than anything which is a breath of fresh air compared to most in F1.
