Hi,

First of all, thanks to anyone who reads this.

I started a new job a couple of months ago which is almost 70 miles away, and I will commute on average 3.5 days per week.

Naturally, the most sensible thing to do is get a 100k+ mile 11 year old Jaguar right? Well, obviously not, I probably should have got a Toyota Avensis but never mind!

A good friend of mine has one of these, and we car shared to work for about 9 months, the ride comfort and good turn of pace got me interested. Strangely enough, his has been totally reliable in 5 years of ownership, the only thing needing attention outside of routine servicing has been inlet manifolds (£550 each to replace), which I thought was rather good!

I saw this one advertised cheaply at a small car sales that work opposite a Jaguar specialist, the advert read well and the salesman seemed to describe it fairly honestly.

There are some marks on the bodywork that have been touched in, and to be honest, aren't that noticeable, but this was his reason for it being cheap.

Its also the lowly 'luxury' spec, so misses out on heated and cooled seats, blind spot assist, upgraded audio, and probably some other stuff, but I'm not that fussed.

I sold a Ford focus to buy this car and I can't really believe they were the same price for what you get - I guess not everyone wants to run an old cat that might throw up some big bills.

Apparently the previous owner was an old boy who struggled with the cars size, hence the bodywork, and the wheels are in desperate need for a refurb. The tyres are all really good but mismatched and that makes my teeth itch.

Anyway, here's a couple of pictures from the Ad, I'll try to post some updates from time to time for anyone who's interested.

I didn't want a pale interior but this one came up at the right time with the right history. It drove beautifully from Essex back to northamptonshire, and if the computer is to be believed, sipped fuel too.

Lovely, and a nice interior with a nice bit of wood, just as a Jaguar should. Never understand the desire some have to have swathes of dull, scratchy silver plastic everywhere!

Thanks, I do like the interior but I'd have gone for black in the first instance as I'll occasionally have a muddy labrador clipped on to the isofix on the back seat, so I've ordered a decent cover!

Love these. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade the stereo to carplay/android auto for your commute too

Brilliant, thanks for the link - looks like a great upgrade, I'll run it for a while until I fully trust it and then have a look in to that.

Wheel refurb first though, they're terrible.

No problem! Also, you should join 'Jaguar Forum'

Really helpful bunch, I've asked all sorts on there!

I'm on my second Xf, originally a 2.7d and now and end of line mk1 3.0d-s. IMO they are very underrated cars. My 2.7d was a bit of a shed when I bought it (got it for similar reasons to you) but it cleaned up well and was very reliable. The 3.0s was a rare find, looked after very well by previous owner and low miles - it is very impressive cross-country. I hope you'll enjoy yours!

However, sorry to say android options are limited for your model. The android model shown requires the face-lift stereo system. I have found one system offered in China for pre-facelift but very expensive and haven't found anyone using it.

If you have the ipod interface in Centre armrest then a Bluetooth receiver is a good alternative. I use an invery system as a carplay alternative. Without the ipod interface it is more difficult, I did try an Alexa Auto in the 2.7d for a while and it was OK.

Do like these, fancy doing a few holidays round the UK and now past 50 can carry a Jag off properly and using a modified Fiesta ST fills me with dread for that.

Was thinking a cheapish one of these, how much did you pay, ball park if you dont mind me asking ?

Would be a diesel 3.0 as well, lot of car for the money like old Jags always tended to be but without the propensity to go in large crusty holes.

I put 60k miles on my 2.2 and wished I had never sold it. Could easy get 50mpg + on a run all day.

The only problem I had was a snapped spring on the front suspension.

Does the Jag suffer with snapped cranks in the 3.0 like the Discovery 4?

I've had two XF's with the 3L twin turbo diesel (and a 2.2), each did around 80k miles in my hands, I now have a RRS with the same engine (by choice), and I only left Jag for the the RRS as I moved into a very rural location.

I've had one DPF problem and one failed oil level sensor, neither took the car off the road. That is it. The only downtime was for routine servicing (and I do look after my cars).

I see lots of comments about snapped cranks. It may be true, I can only speak of my experience.

OP - good choice, enjoy it!

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Shame to hear that the ICE upgrade is face-lift only. I'm reasonably okay with the AUX only. Just need a good phone holder. Its got Bluetooth hands free for calls so that's good. And apparently its crystal clear on the other end of the phone. Not bad for an 11 plate car really.

I had 4 wheel alignment done today and it was WAY off. The older gent who owned it previously has smashed the wheels to pieces so I thought I'd better get this done sharpish as not to cause uneven tyre wear.

Enquired about wheel refurb today and I'm hoping to have my local specialist give it a once over just to see if it's okay and if any of the big jobs like inlet manifolds have been done already.

The cambelt was done in 2020, and in the last 8000 miles its had both an A and a B service at a specialist so I'm very happy with that.

I don't want to speak too soon but it drives beautifully, extremely smooth and a good turn of pace when needed. I really, really like this thing.

Age is just a number Jacko, I'm only 30 laugh

I started watching the car on ebay and it was advertised at 4250, with the advert saying the bodywork isn't perfect hence the price.

Then the seller reduced it to 3950 and I had to rush down and look at it immediately.... I'm impatient like that...

The bodywork is actually rather good for a car of its age and size in fairness. It's been fairly carefully touched in in one or two places but personally I don't mind as it means I won't be overly precious over it.

It's not the spec I would have gone for if I'd had more time or patience but it seemed like such an honest motor and at that price for a 2011 with 110k miles it seemed like a no brainer.

I'll keep this thread up to date with any issues but hopefully there won't be too many....err.....

I used this guy:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163516172380?hash=item2...

He'll 3D print a holder to fit in the front cup holder/ash tray slot for your phone. Just make sure you get the correct listing, as there are some differences. But he does explain in the ad. I'm happy with mine and with a bit of careful wiring of the USB cables looks factory fit.

That's basically how I ended up with my second one. biggrin Enjoyed the first one immensely, but wasn't quite the spec I'd have with more time and effort. Found one with the right spec quite by chance while drifting the internet and part ex'd. Done 11k miles in this one since march (including a v-max run in north Germany) and its been a pleasure.
