Whats the best solution for engine breathing on a tuned motor if you don’t want to connect the breathers to the carbs?

Ive been using a crude catch tank, but its fumy, looks crap and ive heard the engine can suck crap back in when it cools. Are those breather air filters any good, although you don’t ever see them on competition cars? I could get an expensive bespoke ally catch tank with breathable cap or just hide a plastic bottle under the wing? Does it really do any harm having the catch tank open to the atmosphere?
