I've been using Sage for around 30 years now (Dos versions at first) however I'm now winding down de-registering from vat but not closing completely.
It seems daft to keep paying sage a monthly fee for just a few invoices a month, so I'm looking for something cheap (free?)
The few small trade customers that I'll supply are not vat registered either but obviously want invoices to show.
Any recommendations?

Do you have Word or Excel - or the free version in Libre Office? You can create a perfectly good invoice manually.

No neither of those, I’d prefer a dedicated package.

You could look at setting up a Mettle Business account which is free and gives you free access to FreeAgent accounting software which I used to create invoices.

I don't use Mettle myself - I get FreeAgent as part of the package from my accountant - but AIUI, you don't actually need to use the account, just keep £5 in it (or whatever) and you should be ok.

Thanks, Barclays offer a free package to business account holders but ideally id like to close that account.
I found an old laptop at home that has a version of Sage financial controller on it, I think ill try and use that.

Maybe Google docs template, just need a browser? If you fire up docs or sheets should be easy enough to find a ready made template

+1 for this. I was a FreeAgent (paid) user for years and then got it for free by opening a Mettle account. Great software, bit of a no-brainer for any small business owners IMO thumbup

I recently got a Barclaycard cashback credit card for the business and it was offered with a complimentary Freshbooks subscription (which we don't need as I have an in-house bookkeeping system). I guess you wouldn't need to use the card that much to keep it ticking over.

What accounts package, if any are you using? If you are going to use one then pick one with an invoicing function.

I'm not clear what 'invoicing software' is though.

I generate my invoices and track all my business purchases from MyBrightbook. Its web based rather than software, free, you can put your logo on the template & quite basic but does everything I need (plus other bits I don't use)

http://www.simple-invoice.co.uk It's £20 one off fee and should easily cover what you are after.
