1st time importing from abroad (USA). DHL delivered, i had debit card ready to pay and guy said it wasnt on his records to pay on delivery - sometimes it invoiced at a later date. Ok so signed and took delivery

Roll on couple of months accountant is asking whats being paid/happening.... Ive pulled the paperwork and found a waybill which says receiver will pay for duty and taxes. Not had any invoice and theyve got all our contact details correct. Ive tried entering delivery details online, not found, ive phoning DHL yest but no response.

Any experience or advise ? I dont want the VAT or HMRC on my back esp as we are into next VAT period now.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you are VAT registered it would have been an in and out anyway, if not just treat it as anything else you buy with no vat charged. It may well have been non dutiable, hence no duty to pay.

If you haven't paid VAT and haven't tried to reclaim any VAT the VAT man isn't coming for you. HMRC won't come after you for a purchase from a VAT / Import duty perspective.

I'm a bit thrown by you saying the accountant is asking what's happening. Is this a business transaction and / or for resale?

Could be complicated by that but why not ask your accountant?

thanks - these are goods for resale in uk

My partner used to work for a company and they order same goods - they pay duty/vat when it gets delivered hence being unsure why we havent been charged and implications.
