How To Sew A Button By Hand
**Sewing A Button With 2 Holes
Step 1
Threading The Needle
The first step in sewing anything is to thread the needle. Take 16 inches of thread and guide it through the needle eye. Thread it double and knot it ends. If the thread is thick, your stitches will be strong, but if you use a thin thread, double it so the stitches hold the button. You can also use a needle threader if the needle eye is too narrow for the naked eye to glide the thread through it.
Step 2
Mark the Position of the Button
You already know the sewing position of the button if you are replacing it. However, mark a dot or cross on the pattern piece before sewing the button when working with sewing patterns.
Put your needle down into the cloth on the right side and lift it about 1/8" (3mm) away. Once the knot is made, trim any extra thread. Once you're completed, the button will cover this knot.
Step 3
Stitching the Button
Place the button in the center of the marked position. Pass the threaded needle down from one side of the button and push it back up through the opposite hole. Follow this drill and stitch the holes for 3 to 4 times.
Step 4
Tie a Knot
When you are done stitching the button, without going through the button, raise the needle to the top. Wrap the stitches with the thread for a few times. Tie a knot by passing the needle to the side.

**Sewing A Button With 4 Holes
Follow steps 1 and 2 for threading the needle and marking the position of the button.
Step 3
Stitching The Button

**Sewing A Shank Button
The shank button follows the same steps as those above two. The only difference is that you must pass the threaded needle through the hole/shank underneath.

Step 3
Stitching The Shank
The shank on the button's underside should be threaded with the needle. Place the button in the center of the mark and re-insert the needle into the fabric's back. Stitch through the shank a few more times as you raise the needle to the top.
Step 4
Tie a knot
Please don't put the needle through the button; instead, raise it to the top. Pass the needle to one side and tie a knot a few times.
