A genuine gentle giant, car buff, and could boast a CV that varied from James Bond (his Russian gangster Valentin Zukovsky being one of the high points of Pierce Brosnan's tenure IMO) to disguising himself as a nun alongside Eric Idle.

Agree with all the comments above. Well said, folks.
One role that I really liked was in a drama called 'National Treasure', in which he played a TV celebrity accused of rape. His on screen wife was played by Julie Walters, and both actors were wonderful.

A larger than life character in many ways. RIP.

I've been wondering what he's been up to.

Quite apart from his acting his motoring programmes were always worth watching; his 'B-road Britain' series was the inspiration for many of the long distance drives I've done in my Riley.
