This dosent sound good for DAB

France's four largest radio broadcasters have all said they don't want to use the DAB system, citing that it is outdated, inefficient and expensive. They say that DAB's main problem is its use of the MP2 audio codec which requires high bit rates to provide good audio quality, which results in each DAB multiplex only being able to carry very few radio stations at a good audio quality, which in turn results in high transmission costs because the capital expenditure for each multiplex can only be shared between few radio stations. They say, as I have said many times on here, that it is time to move on from DAB and instead use modern technology, including taking advantage of the higher efficiency that the HE AAC and AAC audio codecs allow.
So does this mean DAB is going to die an early death ? and what will replace it ?

I agree it does NOT work very well. It is a ploy to clear all the analogue frequencies for something else.
'Digital Quality' is a phrase that is banded around quite a bit but means sod all, ie in the TV world compression creates a lossy picture removing the high end frequencies hence what goes in does not come out the other end.
The truth is it works in their favour pumping more channels of s
t in the same amount of space as one analogue signal.

As it happens I have an FM-only tuner/amp in my hifi; it has no aerial connected.
In the TVR I have a CD autochanger, none of the radio presets are tuned and I never listen to it. And the car has no aerial.
The Lotus has no audio equipment.
The Transit has a CD player/radio: again I never listen to the radio. I prefer the sound of tyres and turbodiesel to the cra that is passed-off as entertainment.
At work I am bombarded wih the sound of Radio 1, TFM (local crap) and Century (more local crap) as the other techies don't seem to be able to work without it.
I take great delight in sparking up an angle-grinder, x-ray siren or air-line whenever possible
There is a TV in the house; I don't own it nor is my name on the licence. I 'watch' it as little as possible.
Nor do I read the papers.
Strangely, my life doesn't seem to suffer.

Radio 1 used to be ace all the time, but now its all gone a bit Moyles and its only some of the evening shows that are worth listening to. Radio 2's good as well, they play some crap but also play some truly stonking songs too, full versions of really varied tunes, with no talking over the end. God, I never thought I'd be reccominding R2 at 28 what a looser

As far as I'm concerned the Jewel in the crown of DAB is BBC Radio 6.
O.K. So DAB technology isn't the best. The way that te government are selling off the airwaves to the higest bidder, frankly stinks. But I reckon DAB is here to stay.

I think it's great! It's the only way to get Planet Rock without bunging up my PC or having the telly on!
My perfect Sunday morning consists of reading the newspaper in bed (Times motoring section) listening to Planet Rock.
DAB is crap and always will be. In Japan and the USA the forthcoming terrestrial digital radio services use lossless compression, but this sucks more bandwidth hence fewer broadcasters per multiplex. Our money grabbing Government went with DAB because they could squish more broadcasters per multiplex and hence get more licences and more money. Gits.

- and helped the tech crash of 2000 which destroyed the industry and wiped out most people's pension funds. The they tax what's left
and wonder why we're not saving. Anyway, it's R4 for me, though I do have to turn off that git Humphries sometimes. As for local 'Crap FM' and 'Radio W.A.N.K', I agree entirely!

It's usually Prescott or Straw that cause me to swear at the radio and turn it off, not Humphries.
