Showing my monster to the public
Discussion
Armed with tissue paper, two tubes of glue, wire, and about 6 metres of thin wood bent into a circle to form the base, I built a MASSIVE mini hot air balloon this afternoon, big enough for nearly a dozen people to squeeze inside :)
It looks pretty cool, very big(!) and only took half an afternoon to build. Nearly 20 square metres of tissue paper will have been used when I've finished fitting the roof, which will be tricky as the balloon is circular in shape. We've got 20 people coming over for a BBQ and hopefully balloon launch(!) at my girlfriends place tomorrow.
:bounce:
Are there any regulations regarding notifying authorities if launching large objects into the towns airspace?
If the balloon can take the added weight, I was thinking of attaching some fireworks on a 5 minute delayed cigarette fuse, the aptly named airbombs of course! Any suggestions of what else to send up into the clouds attached to the balloon?

You need the tried and tested workshop method
Have you thought that some fighters might get scrambled to intercept?

We actually have a 4 day airshow on right now, with three quarters of a million people attending over 4 days.
And erm... did I mention that the airshow, people and fighters are less than 600 metres from my girlfriends place, added to which the wind normally blows in the direction of the show
We'll have wait untill the fighters have gone home before launching
I wouldnt want a repeat of this story in which a police chopper spots a home made balloon, thinks its a UFO, and files a report saying it attacked them

Aye Aye Bob,
Tried a similar thing with taped up bin bags when I was a kid, had a few demijohns of Caustic Soda and added snapped up television aerial (aluminium U section), the resulting hydrogen got the lot light but not airborne. When I decided to set fire to it instead, it cracked some of the back windows of the house!
It probably won't fly but the hydrogen method will at least wake up the village!

Soooo... Todays launch depends on the wind. Last night I scrambled out my bedroom window, and launched a balloon from the roof (one of the small ones I bought). It sailed up over the house, and suddenly dissappeared!
So I climbed up higher to see over the building and spotted it sinking, slowly being blown sideways, and heading towards grotbags house (she is the shriveled old witch who hates cars and people, especially if they're loud or decatted). I could just imagine it flying into and knocking on her window in the middle of the night, waking her up, setting fire to her curtains, and her spying me stood on my roof across the road
Thankfully the balloon passed her house, drifted further down the road and hit a huge tree, got stuck and collapsed instantly bursting into flame. After the initial tissuepaper fire burnt out, the wick still burns for a long while, a small fireball the size of a large grapefruit which was left dangling 20 feet up in the air in a tree not looking very inconspicuous at all!
Then I heard a car approaching, who would surely see the fireball in the tree ... At this point Im now laying in the shadows on the roof watching, crapping it, expecting sirens any minute, thankful there were no fireworks attached. Several minutes later it fell from the tree (still burning) and eventually went out after no doubt scortching someones lawn black
The balloon didnt go up because you are supposed to wait till balloon is hot enough to pull itself up out of your hands, rather than releasing it early with an upwards push before its properly heated

Are you in a flightpath? We sent up some big rockets (i.e not fireworks) near the Edinburgh Airport flightpath once and the policeman they sent round to tell me to stop being such a tw@ wasn't very amused.
And they didn't have a pound of high explosives attached to them either like you are planning to do.
Mind you, all we got was a warning not to be so bloody stupid in future.

Quick troll in google gave me some rules and regulations with regards to rockets etc. www.star.le.ac.uk/~npb/hprp/safetycode3.pdf

Oh no.....does this mean there could be a delay in the launch of the monster while a certificate is issued?
I was soooo waiting to get front stadium viewing of the monster cos vixpys' armoury of torpedoes are now a bit tame compared to the sound of this. He won't even purchase VLSW missiles

EricMc will be along shortly to outline which paragraphs of the Civil Aviation Act you're contravening....

Was goin to suggest he might like a job where i once worked. One room named as the library had all CAA reports on plane crashes. No-one ever in there so they closed it down and put the files i don't know where...?
