'The Buildings That Fought Hitler' - RAF Kenley - on Freeview 27 'Yesterday' now.

Just looked up to see a Ju52 supposedly bombing Kenley... why oh why oh why do these people not check their edit with somebody who actually knows what the aeroplanes look like? banghead

Stock footage. Documentary makers often use inappropriate footage as footage needs to be purchased and often budgets are restricted

Ju52s we’re actually used as bombers in the Spanish Civil War and in the Polish campaign. However, they weren’t used against Britain

There was plenty of reasonably accurate stock footage, but no excuse for a clip of a Ju52.

I don't expect editors to be particularly knowledgeable about a subject, their skill is editing, but the producer should pay more attention. On the plus side, they did refer to the enemy as Germany and not, as is the modern trend, 'the Nazis'. We were at war with Germany, country vs country.

Because they don’t care, and they think, probably correctly, that the majority of their audience don’t care either. See also almost every film before CGI became commonplace and any old aircraft of approximately the right shape was used.

Some of the efforts in the early 1940s were decidedly amateur, but I'm prepared to cut them some slack as most of the 'stock footage' hadn't been filmed then!

I think I'd prefer models on strings to tacky CGI.

This.
Did it change the facts in the documentary?
Nope.
Ergo, No one cares.

You changed 'majority' to 'no-one'.

Clearly you don't care, but I do. Because (1) it makes them look amateur at best, careless at worst, and (2) could very easily have been avoided. Where's the line? Would a Catalina be acceptable? A nice Sopwith Camel maybe? After all they wouldn't change the facts in the documentary and they're all aeroplanes. Just shove 'em in, nobody will notice!

Yes, I agree. I am another one who like to see accuracy in documentaries.

+1. It's very easy to get it right in the majority of cases. Seems lazy at best.

This can also be extended out to the wrong cars, trains, uniform etc appearing in period dramas, which I also notice far too much hehe

Plus 'Christmas' scenes, for example, clearly being filmed in the height of summer with all the leaves still on the trees. Yes, Peaky bloody Blinders, I'm talking about you.

If they've got that wrong, what else have they got wrong?
