Wouldn't surprise me.
Brit's view of the value of money is a bit skewed - to us a fiver is nothing and it seems almost impossible that a whole DVD player could be manufactured using the amount it costs to buy a McDonalds meal.
But in China, and many other parts of the world, £5 is a lot of money and can go a lonnnnggggg way.
That, coupled with the economies of scale of supplying the world with their DVD players.

Exactly. It's all relative. Petrol doesn't cost 90p/litre in China and tax is probably neglible. If we didn't pay half all out earnings in tax, we could live just as well on half as much and/or be rich.
The manufacturing facilities for these types of consumer devices are the most advanced in the World with them making absolutely everything in the same factory. Literally, raw materials go in one end and DVD players come out of the other. The chips are fabbed on site, PCB's made, etched and assembled, sheet metal stamped and cut to make cases. injection mouldings, the works. They generally run three or more lines of units at different specs which are then badged appropriately at the end of the line and shipped out. It could be the case that Shirley's Pacific is built on a line next to a Pioneer.
Manufacturers like Pacific etc may well be the plant's own brand, but you can have them customised to your own brand at very little cost.
I have an AMW P80L DVD player which I bought because it plays everything - DVD, DVD-Audio, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, JPEG, MPEG, MP3, WMA etc etc. It has fully updateable firmware and cost £40. The only downside to it is the SCART does not carry RGB, so you have to use S-Video which means adapter cables and such for me as my S-video input is via SCART. Other than that it's great.
The picture and sound quality of thr AMW is not as good as my Panasonic though, but the latter cost 5 times as much.
Anyways, back to topic, yes, a fiver is about right at a guess...
