I have just entered TVR ownership with a 1988 S1 and am loving the experience.

I am just learning the basics and need some advice from the experts (sorry if this is boring old stuff)

What I have found so far:

The temp goes up over 90c with even moderatley sustained periods over 80Mph and also when you drive her like you should with plenty of acceleration - although she will sit just below 80Mph for miles and miles dead on 90c.

Obviously suspect cooling system first (previous owner only did 4,000 miles since 1998) so it has sat around quite a bit with plenty of time for sediment to solidify.

I would like to put a tin of radflush in first to see if that does the trick (mainly 'cos I am lazy) - do the 2.8i engines have ali heads? (if so I won't do it).

Any other suggestions other than a manual hose washthrough of the rad? I see a fair bit about temp sensors on this site too? (although I am doubtful due to the symptoms).

Grounding is very easy, especially with two-up (Hmmm - interesting connontations!) - guess I need to look into rear springs and shocks?

OK - that's my starter for ten.

Worth trying all the quick and easy fixes before you spend money on hte rad: check the coolant level, bleed the rad and if it still overheats under load consider replacing the stat.

Sounds like a replacement rad is required.

I have just replaced mine and now the temperature stays constant.

It would be worth bleeding the system first though and trying a flush. I would check for leaks afterwards though as old rads tend to suffer in the lower corners.

Heads are not aluminium. Good old (heavy) cast iron.

Hi

Mine sits at 90 - 92 degrees all the time, doesnt normally budge any higher.
I would suggest after its been standing for some time it may be as simple as a new thermostat

Just a thought

Thanks to all. Just as I thought - a process of elimination from cheapest to most expensive resolution. I'll give it a go in stages starting with the flush.

Didn't realise there was a meet on tomorrow. Have done research through the postings and am hoping to make it even though it is a bit last minute

John.
