Hello all

One of my exhaust cans came off my Tuscan Mk. 1 last week courtesy of a large pot hole / hump !

I’ve got hold of a new clamp but before I try fitting it does anyone know if a) you definitely need to also apply a sealant eg high temp silicone b) if the latter is vital, any recommendations? and c) what the right amount of torque is for an exhaust band clamp? Got the clamps from Racetech but no idea how tight these should be.

Many thanks for anything thoughts!

The hard part I found was removing the old ones, once off the new cans slipped on easily without using any sealant. I then used a short extension socket and ratchet to tighten up by hand as much as possible, believe it was a 12mm nut on the exhaust clamp. Run up to operating temperature and then let them cool down and check the tightness again.

Also check the rubber strap that the exhaust hooks into at the rear of the cans, if they are lifted too high when coming off a kerb for instance they can unhook themselves and drop lower than usual, you can see the strap looking through the spider alloy wheel and rehook/reposition if necessary. smile

The can clamps are "MIKALOR" as originally fitted - they use a 10mm spanner on the clamp bolt. Whilst good quality, being stainless, the bolt can strip its thread if overtightened.

Good advice regarding checking the hanger strap - they do become dislodged when the can is pushed up by coming off a kerb/bank.
Worthwhile buying new clamps - easily sourced - Ebay or Amazon?

Many thanks for your reply and especially for the advice to check the rubber strap

Having recently replaced the clamps on mine that hold the cat output onto the exhaust, I bought these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221623600550 55-59mm ones - but make sure you check your diameter before ordering that size.

This isn't a TVR specific opinion but I tend to think sealant on exhausts is a waste of time, on my race car it doesn't last very long, not even long enough to endure the two race repack schedule I do, even if I use proper high temp stuff...what's more important is that you have it well mounted and solidly clamped.

Thanks everyone for your tips. With a bit of elbow grease to open up the metal on the end of the can which had got slightly bent, I finally managed to wiggle it back on. Applied a bit of exhaust paste that I picked up for good measure and a new band clamp which I hand tightened. All looks OK but will feedback if any issues.
