996 Turbo health check - Rolling Road questions
Discussion
Looking for some suggestions....
Got a new car and want to have it checked over after a service, smoke test etc. Point is to check the map and state of tune for the car... is the fuelling ok through entire rev range etc. The car has some minor upgrades (exhaust, ICs, wastegates) and has had a remap.
I have a trusted independent tuner that we normally use for rolling road sessions, but they have stated the 996 should be run on a linked AWD rolling road, and theirs in independent F/R 4WD.
We have run clutch based transfer 4wd systems on their rolling road before, but have always taken precautions to either make RWD (GTR) or lock drive 50/50 (Impreza DCCD).
Are there any work arounds for the 996 other than simply removing the front prop? I understand that's not too time consuming so may be the best bet.
Other than a work around - is there any known rolling road's near Aberdeen/in Scotland that are 'linked'?

I had this issue, you can't disconnect the prop without it throwing up major errors as the speed sensors know the front wheels aren't turning. This freaks out the pasm etc. They ran mine as is and fried my diff. Lesson learned. I was lucky and warranty replaced the front diff.
Don't do it, find a proper tuner with the right kit.

PASM - turn off, fuse out. The lights will be ABS d/t wheel speed diff. That should be easy to clear after the fact.
Finding a linked dyno would be preferable.... but regarding a 'proper' tuner.
Id rather use a workshop i trust and have used for years over someone new - these is that to consider too LOL

We tried this and it constantly tried to retard ignition. Finding a linked dyno would be preferable.... but regarding a 'proper' tuner.

Each to their own but personally I'd rather use an experienced tuner than a workshop. Someone that actually understands how to safely and effectively map cars. Lol
I feel like we are getting into an argument about nothing here... lol
tuner/workshop - whatever.
The garage/tuner/workshop i use/want to stick with is experienced. Maps our cars etc.
All I'm really looking for is recommendations and feedback on running 996TT with front prop out or locations for a linked dyno. IF i go to a linked dyno this would be an unknown 'tuner' to me...

No arguments here, just my experience when faced with the same challenge. tuner/workshop - whatever.

They'll be lots of options out there, give Ken a buzz at 9E, he'll point you in the right direction.

Isn’t there a problem with being able to generate sufficient cooling and air flow or something like that ? Alternative is to attach the computer and take it on run.
I would do that, and map it on an airfield.I tried mapping a 996 Turbo on a 4wd dyno, but we just couldn’t get enough airflow through all the rads, and once you’ve got heat soak, you’re finished.

good point re cooling.
They have a massive fan but its wall mounted and ducted - but still central to dyno cell, not an option to force towards rear 1/4s
Will see what they can check with a test drive... they'd be able to clamp a wideband on anyway, thats the main thing.
I'm not wanting it remapped, just a verification of the map thats on it. Peace of mind that the fueling is ok etc

Just email your chosen outfit the file, why do they need to run it? A decent tuner will tell you straight away. Then run an obd dongle via your phone and check AIT and fueling etc. Job done. Or am I missing something?
To add to this I’d also suggest that it’s given a proper once over by a specialist. There is all sorts that can hamper a proper tune even if the tune/map itself is good. Then also I think knowing the limits of the upgrades eg are they gt2rs ics or not as good? What other bits.
Also one of the best mods is new stiffer (rss I think) engine mounts. It’s been a while since mine was done so can’t remember the details and dare not look at receipts again ! But defo reccomend a proper assessment before even checking a map.

Anyway... i know what I want to do. Check fueling. The question is where/how to work around 4wd etc
