As a weekend car, what is your pick and why? All similar money, I’d like to put money into something that I’ll enjoy on weekends and hopefully won’t lose too much money

My worries about the 997.2 TS is that is it still quick by todays standards? Engine and PDK.

Never actually driven a Porsche, just admired from afar but I’ve heard great things. I’m used to M3’s, M2 comps etc.

Edit: 997.1 GT3 comfort

A 997.2 Turbo S will still be plenty fast! In fact in a straight line at least, as fast as a non S 991.1 Turbo.

As for what suits your needs best, go and drive all of them!

I have a 997.2 GTS PDK, its as quick as anything I need and a pleasure to steer down a B road, if you want straight line speed or traffic light grnd prix winners, you'll need an electric car, our i3 would embarrass our 911 from 0-40 !!!

Sorry a 997.1 GT3 but non club sport so comfort spec

I’m going to see if I can stretch to a 991.1 GT3 also as that would obviously win, hands down.

I do need to test drive them all, just finding it hard to find decent cars where I don’t want to mess the dealers around if it’s not the ideal spec.

991.1 GT3 is my next move, you'll see a buying advice thread started by me on the list above or below this thread, I've been given some good info, so may be worth you having a read.

You could say they are variations along the spectrum of tactility and pace and if you're used to BMWs then it would be a bit like comparing:

Previous-gen M3 (F80?) - fastest and most modern
E92 M3 DCT - an older feel and a bit more tactility
E46 M3 CSL (converted to manual) - most focussed

Setting aside values and depreciation, if you have a favourite out of the 3 above it would point you to which 911 might tickle your fancy the best.

The 997 is an old car compared to the 991! Not saying this a bad thing, in fact I drive a 997 (although as basic as it gets: C2).
With the 997 - be it a Carrera, a GT3 or a Turbo S - you have an analogue car that is relatively small in dimensions. The cabin, seating position, the relatively steep and small windscreen feels dated compared to a 991, which will always feel like a much more modern car. One could even go as far as calling a 997.1 a modern classic car, which is no wonder they are in fact a heavily facelifted 996 which is a design more than 1/4 century old.

Many see in a 997 GT3 a pinnacle 911 design, with it being the last really compact 911 and the last with good old school hydraulic PAS. For a weekend car, I'd go for a 997 GT3 if I where you. For a DD I'd choose the 991 Turbo. The 997.2 Turbo S is a great car, no questioning there, but imho it falls between the other two. It has the 997's small dimensions and feel with the power of the 991 Turbo (same engine IIRC).

For a weekend car, I'd enjoy a manual, N/A, small and nimble 997.1 GT3 in comfort spec the most.

Good explanation...

I’ve bought a new 911 every 2-3 years since the late ‘80s, and had two 997s - a 997.1 GT3 (non-CS with ‘comfort’ sports seats) for 3 years, and a 997.2 PDK Turbo S for 2 years.

The GT3 I liked. Some road use compromises, but an engaging car that felt fun and purposeful, and very accomplished for occasional ‘track’ use

The Turbo S was a bit disappointing, although I tried to love it at the time. Fast - yes, but less rewarding than the GT3. In fact, a bit bland IMO - I think a ‘manual’ Turbo would have been more interesting.

For a weekend car I’d choose the GT3. But, the 991 moved the game on, and I liked both the 991.1 and 991.2 variants - had a C4 GTS PDK and GT3 Touring Manual.

Neither was perfect - 4wd and PDK do rob the 911 of some of its basic qualities - and for me the ‘Touring’ was a surprisingly disappointing ‘road car’ in the U.K.
Any GT3 is only justifiable IMO if it enjoys some track use, otherwise you’ll never experience its ultimate raison d’etre.

I like the traditional 911 virtues, so moved to a base (narrow- body) 991.2 manual. Simple, everyday useable, fun, and now on 36k miles.
One of the nicest 911s I’ve had, and, oddly, prefer the .2 ‘turbo’ engine characteristics to the .1 NA.
Yet to find the love for the 992, though.

I had a 996T for 8 years, loved it to bits but it was too good at being an all weather car and I wanted something for weekend use.

Now in a 997 GT3 comfort (with recently fitted Tequipment roll bar). Fits the job perfectly…997.2 carbon folding buckets next, still practical (small suitcases fit between the bar) and all the special factor you ever need

As per the above, if it’s daily use I’d go for a 997.2 Turbo, not a huge fan of the newer stuff..

The 997.2 TS feels every bit, if not quicker than the 991 because there is a little more drama with its launches.

It really depends on how you use the car, but having owned all three, if I could only have one then I couldn't turn down a GT3. They operate on another plane, frankly.
