One dead and a further 200 separate arrests. What a party that must have been. Good to have it back.

313 arrests in 2017.

I thought it was like that all the time.

Be careful you’ll be accused of Racism for pointing this out.

4 mil people attend the carnival over 3 days and there have been 6 deaths since 1987 (according to wiki).

The title of this thread seems hyperbolic.

The title of this thread seems hyperbolic.
Doesn't seem appropriate to focus on the number of deaths alone what about the rest of the article which reads:

Police said 209 arrests had been made by early Tuesday, "including 46 for assault, 36 for possession of drugs, 33 for possession of an offensive weapon, 27 public order offences and eight sexual assaults"

Doesn't strike me as a family event.

Not to mention the numerous videos I've seen of residents in the area setting up fencing around theor houses and boarding up windows to protect their properties.

4 million people and arrests in the hundreds. Seems like a very well policed event.

"Largely peaceful" is the phrase you're all looking for.

I saw a video of that over the weekend, along with one of a Porsche being vandalised.
I'm sure the residents living anywhere near by absolutely hate it.

And most would have moved there knowing that they now live on or near the route and take appropriate precautions.

Not commenting on the violence but have seen a number of videos emerge about the size of crowds and the lengths residents go to protect their property. Seems to me that the event should be moved to a different location.

It’s pretty sad state of affairs that residents have to do that though?

Why the hate? The carnival is good for local business.

That doesn't make it right though.

Yep, residents first. Like when they close a race track because of the noise once a week…

Hmm, how many police are tied up by football each weekend? (Ok, clubs might contribute to the cost)

Or the royal jubilee celebrations? So that seems a weak argument.

And the level of crime is probably not that different from background levels in the capital.

The Notting Hill carnival is enjoyed by millions of people, so it seems quite churlish for some to call for it to be cancelled, when other activities generating similar (relatively low) levels of agro aren't being called out.

Almost as if the OP just doesn't like that sort of thing. I don't even think this counts as unconcious bias, as it seems pretty concious to me.

How many people have been killed or injured at festivals this year? Should we ban festivals?

I have been going since 2003 I never seen or experienced any violence at the carnival. Reggae and D&B sound systems.
