If you're suffering from pinking, and would rather spend the money on octane booster rather than retard the ignition, then octane booster is the right answer. For instance it would make sense if you only suffer from pinking occasionally on hot track days and don't want to keep mucking about with the timing. As a long-term fix it makes rather less sense though.

Yep - short term fix. I think I am getting slight pinking from time to time, so I am going to try to see if some octane boost will make any diff. I'll get it sorted properly at the next service.

Thanks for the advice.

Cheers.

My car pinked a couple of times last year so I used it and it stopped. Funnily enough it hasn't pinked since then, even though I only used it once. I'm not saying that the booster cured it for all time, it's just weird that it only pinked the twice.

I have a Griff 500 and have been using STP or Wynnes octane booster with standard 95 RON unleaded, car runs great, no probs at all, no difference in the car from this to Optimax or Ultimate.

note:- my griff is as factory setup, ie no aftermarked mods etc.

I just carry a little measuring jug and a bottle of booster in the boot, pour the required amount of booster into the jug (5ml per ltr of fuel) at the filling station, tip the booster in first, then fill with standard unleaded, no worries.

If the engines pinking, get it looked at!

Pinking is a nice way of saying detonation - not good, excessive wear and tear and vibrations lead to eventual costly failures!

Octane boost isnt always a good idea, depends on how your timing is currently configured.

Which section in the MSA blue book advises on the octane booster that can be used?

That would be the bit that says "pump fuel only"?
