What is...
Sporty (not necessarily a sports car but sports derived).
A good steer.
Good round Corners.
Fast in a straight line (overtakes).
Garters attention from fellow petrolheads/car lovers (i like to take my cars to shows and the like)
I'd like to get as close to 300 miles per tank i can. (city centre traffic kills mpg - my 7 mile school run takes near enough 1hr)
Has room for 3 people over 4ft 5".
Legitimately sounds good. (NOT fake overrun maps and pops and bangs)
And...is available for under 20k.
My friend recently offered me his M3 BUT i know its ruinous on fuel at the moment and not likely to get any better. Whilst i know it sounds terrific. I can't be putting in £100's a week in fuel. This car would be used to go on school runs, shop runs, weekend drives, do it all really.
Sad that my petrolhead lifestyle is finally being impacted by petrol costs. Never before has this happened. Sad times.

The only criteria difficult to quantify is 'sounds good'. Most hot hatches will be 4 cylinders unless you go for a BMW or something old like an Alfa 3.2. Some people like the way a nice turbo 4 sounds, others don't. Personally I prefer the sound of my Fiesta ST yo the BMW 325i that I had previously. Yes I know its a fake sound pumped through the speakers but it works for me. The Beemer was nice but for me it was too refined and not 'fun' enough.

I can't seem to escape a hot hatch. I was wondering about the rs3 or as an outside bet the TTRS?I30N maybe?

I know neither represent a great steer but the engine is the highlight and, in the TT especially, quite a rare sight which I like... Don't like to have the same car as the crowd. But I don't think the TT can really handle 2 passengers (11 &13 girls) can it? Anyone got tweens and a TT?
Any other choices that represent something a little different?

Hi Steve, how many miles do you do a week/annually? As an example my CLK63 cost me £98 (£1.83 super) to fill up today with a range of 312 miles which rises on longer runs or sometimes it doesn't
There are some semi sensible options out there but unless you higher than average mileage I'd go full fat.

I think focusing on fuel use is a bit of a red herring. Any savings can be so quickly wiped by servicing, a component failure, and of course depreciation. if things are that tight that fuel is an issue it would suggest that maintenance, either planned or unplanned, could be a problem. I'd consider lowering your entry fee to maybe 15k and keeping 5k to fuel/maintain whatever you get.
300 miles to a nominal 50 litre tank is about 28mpg, so scope for a few cars. 12,000 miles pa @ 28mpg @ GBP2/litre is about 4k in fuel each year, which is assumed to be OK with you. If that car does 40mpg, your fuel cost is still about 2.7k, so a saving of around 1.3k pa. If it only does 20mpg, then your fuel cost goes up by about 1.4k pa to 5.4k. The difference sounds a lot, but is probably outweighed by the costs of servicing, maintenance, insurance and depreciation.
Get something you like, for a little less than 20k so you've got a buffer, and enjoy.
