Reason for posting here not in Finance/Supercars or Car Buying is that it spans all these topics.

We all know tax incentives have heavily shaped the car market in the UK for a while, whether it’s towards diesels, then away, then towards PHEVS, then those 4 door pick-ups, and now of course pure EV.

PHEVs can still work out well, so question is, does anyone know if for those with a few quid, does something like the 296 GTB actually start to make sense again as a company car? Or, are there any other of these new breed super cars which are going to be very popular with directors who have a good accountant?

I’m intrigued!

Cheers
Rob

Company car tax bands https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-ne... or https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/fleet-faq/what-are-the...

Answer, yes and no.

To benefit from the plug-in specific lower rates of tax, a car must have CO2 emissions lower than 50 g/km. You then pay 2, 5, 8 or 12% based on the electric-only range.

The facelifted BMW i8 extends its official electric range to 34 miles, getting it into the 12% band.

The Artura at 129 g/km and 296 GTB at 149 g/km don't qualify for the hybrid-specific tax breaks. However, the hybrid systems do lower their official emissions, putting them at 30% and 34% respectively, vs the normal top band that any non-hybrid supercar would fall into of 37%.

So a worthwhile saving compared to an F8 or a 570S, but not a game-changer.

Given the withdrawal of the i8, the cancellation of the Jag CX-75, and the general push towards full electric, I think the weight of batteries needed to score a truly low BIK tax rate probably mean we won't see such a car, or at least I can't think of any.

Will have to save your pennies and get a Lotus Evija, Pininfarina Battista or Rimac Nevera to truly get one over Rishi Sunak, Nadhim Zahawi or whoever's in Number 11 this week.

Thank you for that comprehensive analysis! I’d sort of come to the same conclusion but good to know I’m not missing anything. I suppose an i8 could still work out quite well but, it’s not really massively appealing.

Not sure if a Polestar 1 is enough of a sportscar but it has 600hp and falls into the lowest bracket at 15g/km CO2.

Then there's some interesting powerful normal cars:
Volvo S60/V60/V90/XC90 T8 - 390hp
BMW 330e/530e - 290hp standard, 420hp stage one
BMW 545e - 394hp standard, 500hp stage one

Also bear in mind to be offset 100% against corporation tax for capital allowances, the car needs to be brand new as well as being electric only.
