I had a 1992 325 coupe which for £40 would last me two weeks before a re-fill, which works out about 250 miles, and I didn't drive conservatively most of the time. You should probably see 300 miles for £40 with a 318 (sorry, I don't know what this equate to in MPG).
The oil service I believe to be about £80. Go to a specialist instead of a mail dealer and you should reduce your bills quite significantly.

I don't know if there are any generic problems with the cars but as it's 13 years old you will have some issues. Mine needed a new radiator, new exhaust, partial new suspension and a new gearbox in the last year that I owned it. Don't let that put you off though, the car had done 150,000 miles, and the year before it needed nothing.
Just buy one which has been looked after ad you should be okay. The build quality is very good and the engines are bomb proof
Who also insures these the cheapest
Insurers vary a lot depending on age & circumstance but I found Tesco, Elephant & Admiral to be the cheapest, in that order

Our 93 model does over 30 mpg average and easily over that on a longer run. Servicing is done by independents and family owned locals and entirely reasonable. Nothing major, touch wood, gone wrong. Only thing is brake light switch and an electric window switch. Still fine on original suspension/bushes and exhaust. It is very easy on Uniroyal Rallye 540/550 tyres which are only ~£52ea fitted. Plastics and fabric wear well.
