I've been offered a '99 Civic VTi the seller says it has an LSD as standard - I can't find mention of this on google

Was an LSD an option, if so how can I tell ?

Car is off the road so I can't test drive it

Thanks

Depends on the gearbox.

If its an MB6 with an s9b then it will have an lsd (1.8 5 door vti)

if its the s4c in the EK4 (1.6 3 door vti) then it wont have an lsd

I'll go and google that - I'm not a Honda guy biggrin

I'm trying to make sense of the prices - some old slow Hondas are worth £2k other similar old slow Hondas are worth £10k

Yet Civic Type Rs sell from £4k confused

Yep all MB6 had an LSD as standard, many have since been used in conversions or mis-sold as Type R boxes but the final drive and gear ratios are
different, one thing that is the same is their likelihood to be crunching into gear, especially 3rd.

I owned one when (nearly) new, and be aware the LSD isn't as obvious/aggressive in behaviour as the ones in the Type Rs. Better than not having one, but don't expect zero understeer.

It’s normally a rarity/scarcity thing. 10 years ago there were a lot more EG/EK/MB/DC2 and they’re slowly whittled down to much much lower numbers so they are more and more expensive. The EP3 is getting here now, numbers are dropping by about 1000 per year so the values have started firming up!

IIRC the S9B and Y89 actually have the same LSD. You are correct that it’s not overly agressive.

My understanding is the Mb6 you are referring to is essentially a re-badged Rover chassis with a Honda engine and box etc, this is why MB6 VTi is a cheaper vehicle, they have a completely different chassis and to some people not a true Honda (not that I care my MB6 was awesome)

Hondas vary massively in value for a whole range of reasons and alot of people struggle to understand this, but to get an idea why it generally takes a little more knowledge than is immediately obvious. My Em1 vti means almost nothing to 99% of people as it looks like a plain old Honda Civic, it just takes a little more knowledge to understand why it is a special car.

AIUI (I may be wrong), Honda engineered the chassis, which was used in Asian, European and US markets, and by Rover.

Front end is effectively a DC/EG subframe / suspension (and indeed used the same engine range), rear-end is a bitsa (not sure why).

...so it IS a true Honda, but the Rover association really won't have helped it, and robbed it of any JDM scene points (which the EG/EK guys can all claim).
