10k-15k Estate/SUV/Van/Pick up……

Hi all. I’m in the position I am sure we all find ourselves in of doing a loop of autotrader // eBay // marketplace on an hourly basis with not much inspiration. Looking to the sage wisdom here to help.

Currently have a 2005 VW Transporter as I do up houses on the side. It’s a PITA and a money pit so I’m looking to get out of it. I have a 2019 Golf GTI PP as my main car. I’ve got a dog, girlfriend and 6 month old. Looking to spend about 10-15k on something to replace he Transporter. Not sure what. Criteria at a basic level:

- can fit a good amount of things in. I might actually consider another hot hatch with a roof rack now I’m writing this?
- at least somewhat reliable
- interesting!

My loop has been F1x 520d estates, F3x 330d estates, transits, Defender (had one a few years ago Would love another but my budget only gets me rough ones). I’m stuck for ideas as none of the above do anything for me. Looking to do the NC500 or something in it in September and Silverstone Classics at the end of this month. Hence interesting.

Was going to suggest a 2014-2016'ish Skoda Octavia vRS estate, but the petrol is pretty rare and the derv will suck if you're used to BMW's 6-pots. The classifieds seem way too overvalued compared to a BMW.

If you're willing to look at a 1-series the F-series 135I's are within budget, but to be honest a 3-series is already on the small side if you want to use it for van-duties but it will be a better steer than the 5-series (and doesn't have the air suspension quibbles).

You don't need a new vehicle to do the NC500 that's what the Golf is for, unless you want to sell the Golf for something more interesting.

In the meantime you need to replace the workhorse with another one.

I'd say the Hyundai i800 makes a lot (once you've removed the seats) sense:

I may be biased, but you seem to be a VW fan, so why not a Passat R36? Big boot, interesting engine, ISOFIX and a lot rarer than you’d think with only 150-odd models in the UK. Surely more interesting than having a four-pot diesel or two hot hatches and having to faff about with a roof rack…?
