Sushi. Hmm... I don't get it. The concept of raw fish (fnarr) just doesn't sound right. Then again, I seem to recall someone saying that it's a misconception etc etc... The truth is, I just don't know. I like my food (mmm... pie) but I just haven't had the courage to try Sushi...
So...
1) Can someone explain what Sushi really is..?
2) Is it all raw fish..?
3) Anyone in the SE / London want to arrange a PH Sushi night out to help educate me..??!?!

Sushi is the flavoured rice, the raw fish is sashimi, and actually it's very nice indeed. I live nowhere near london however, so you'll have to educate yourself. Sorry.
eh ?

i thought Sashimi was partly cooked, but i guess not now !!
First off, Japanese food ain't all raw fish. There is plenty of cooked stuff, including noodles, meat, rice and fish.
Secondly, "sushi" specifically refers to the glutinous vinegared rice and generically to the servings of said rice with toppings, not raw fish. "Sashimi" is filleted seafood, most commonly raw but also served cooked.
I think Sushi is very tasty - the rice itself is quite subtle but flavoursome, and when dipped in Soy Sauce is quite a nice combination. Not at all too at odds with the British pallette.
The raw fish itself can at first taste quite bland - it's got a soft texture and is fairly tasteless, but it is by no means offensive. Lots of people seem to have it in their heads that raw fish is somehow gross - these people have never tried it.
Go and try it one evening - it really isn't as weird as it may seem.

Eat the green one...
(actually don't - the green condiment that is traditionally served with sushi is wasabi which is a high octane Japanese horseradish)
The Mrs eats sushi quite a bit (she's, like, so totally California ya know). I can stomach some of the salmon roe variety and actually the salmon stuff itself but do not care for the other stuff (especially not the squid as I have visions of it suckering on to my esphagial pathway half way down)
Advice - go to a Japanese restaurant and not a sushi bar, that way if you don't like the stuff, you can always opt for a delicious Japanese steak meal (prepared, traditionally, by the chef in front of you).

If so, recommend a good place in London and I'll get round to organising summat
Sounds like Rich1231's place is the best recommendation at the moment. I'll organise parking if he wants to name the date.
I've tried some sushi but not been very adventurous yet. I'm up for it
Edited to say can I stay at your place Pod?

For example, my steak needs to KNOW it's been cooked.. to the extent I should be able to use it for soling my shoes - none of this wipes it's arse and lop its horns off nonsense...
Also when they say "perfectly cooked tuna steak" that will be like a rare beef steak
I think sir should probably stick with his pie
Hmmmm pie
