Just watching lunchtime news and saw an article on the state of trade on & around Lake Windermere since the 10mph speed limit was introduced in march, it seems that tourist trade in the area is down almost 50%

So there you have it 'Speed (or lack of it) kills'

This has been widely reported for months up here.

The Jet ski-ers and motor boat boat types are affluent so they come into the area and spend lots of cash on hotels and food and all sorts of other things and bring prosperity to the area.

So........... the local authority effectively bans them so that its nice and quiet for the tree hunging lentil munching walking brigade who spend fk all and even bring their own fg gluten and gm free sandwiches with them. So all the local businesses go bust.

FG morons!

One assumes that sailing craft might have difficulty sticking to the speed limit.

So when are they putting up the scameras?

its a real shame - not that i liked the tourists around Windermere, i avoided it like the plague because of all the tourists - but at least it had tourism... and kept a lot of people in the area employed...

oh well...

A lot of people that frequented Windermere now frequent Loch Lomond - unfortunately, the consultation period on introducing the same speeding legislation has just started up here and the Scottish Parliament is full of lentil eating idiots...

I hope you're talking about the law-makers, not the lentil-munching brigade.

The lentil-munching walking brigade (of which I am a member on occasion) owe nothing to the local community - we only want to enjoy the natural beauty present within the area, which was not created nor is preserved by local businesses.

so the local community goes under so you can enjoy your walk?

Someone has to pay for access roads and car parks etc. It comes from the locals and therefore beholden on you to put something back in.

The Lake District is massively over-populated for such an area anyway. Ever tried driving around there on a weekend?

Can't understand why they didn't just designate areas of the lake that could be used for waterskiing etc, given that they must have known what effect a total ban would have on tourism.

The local community has got nothing to do with my walk. Maybe it does for the day-trippers, but I walk in places regardless of whether there is civilisation or not.

Whether or not there are people living there is irrelevant to what I do, and hence I owe them nothing. I do occasionally partake of a hotel stay and a meal where available, but I'd be happy to do without.

Not being greedy - just pointing out that the ramblers are not at fault for anything going on there. The economy around Windermere grew due to the water activities, and now because that is drying up (no pun intended) the businesses suffer. Got nowt to do with the lentilist walkers.

Yes, local business pays for better access and facilities, but as a walker my concern is natural beauty, not ease of access or creature comforts. Even remotest Scotland is fairly accessible if you're willing to walk a bit, and the Lakes would be no different even if there was no significant business activity going on around Windermere.

"drying up"?

It's not drying up, it's been outlawed because the local council etc has been taken over by lentlists with an agenda to appease complaints about the noise! What's worse is our government have brought in laws to allow a few local millitants to do this.

With nonegreen not about today, to add a sensible way forward I'd like to suggest public execution and hanging of the councillors responsible. With pay per view proceeds going to those that have lost their jobs.

DAZ

(Nearer to home, I see similarities here of a few people having far to large a voice with the noise problems at Castle Coombe.)

erm, according to the Park Authority that put the speed limit in they are doing this for people like you who want to take in the countryside rather than use the lake.

Yup, just look at Castle Combe, too noisy it seems for the locals, so they can now get some turd in the council to probably ban that venue from having any type of enjoyable sport.
So now local car type places and hotels/b&b's in the area loose a good percentage of their customers and go tits up.

No room for NIMBYS in this country. We have to share and not be selfish!

The people who complain about such things really are the scum of the earth. There is complaining about a noisy neighbour, but a whole economy or something 1000's of people enjoy like at Castle Combe, or the water sports on Windermere.

Clearly they have a right to be there if so many people enjoy it, and people should put up with it, like we all have to do in life. Share and share alike!

If I were the local's now, I'd ban the fookin walkers who trample all the lovely wild flowers and damage the habitats of animals.
Can't have it one way and not the other you tree hugging lentil eating fooks!

Personally, I take in as much pleasure from going flat-out on a jet-ski as I do while on a serene and solitary walk. I certainly made no complaints.

I suspect most of the complaints came from day-trippers and families wanting to enjoy a bit of country and didn't agree with the noise levels and apparent danger of the activities they saw (which may I remind you is completely their right and prerogative). They are the kind who stay in local hotels and who walk around the lake itself.

The real walkers for the most part stay away from Windermere, or walk enough so that they quickly pass Windermere during their walk so much so that noise levels aren't really a concern. I do my walking far north of Windermere, where I tend to find many fellow walkers.

I'm not in the slightest agreeing with the actions of the local councillors - just refuting the implication made by an earlier post that we are somehow to blame.

Yep - no probs (you just have to know which roads to avoid )

And i agree with the whole castle combe - the difference being, the circuit is getting a curfew and might lose the GT - windermere is going to lose somewhere in the region of 75% of its buisness (and as the post says, has already lost 50%) - now living next door to Castle Combe (having grown up in the lakes ironically) i can safely say, there will be no sizable impact on the locals around here, even if Castle Combe did close - whereas, with this Windermere fiasco, it doesnt effect buisnesses in just the local area, but in most of the nearby villages/towns also (Coniston/Kendal etc)...

All because the wakes might damage a few lake-side plants - which by the way, exist in all the other lakes... it really just is stupidity...

The RYA's legal department fought tooth and nail to prevent speed limits on Windermere. They demonstrated well in advance that business would be seriously affected and also that it would only silence a minority who rarely use the water in any case.

The arguments for the speed imposition were really strained, including risible attempts such as suggesting that rare insect species were endagered by the wash on the shores. But somehow the minotities won.

Meanwhile, Labour's ignorant support of NIMBYism marches forth...

Okay I think someones just accused me of being a lentilist. I live near brands hatch which year on year seems to have been getting busier and noisier.

Now it wasn't like that when I moved in and I'm wondering why it should be allowed to get noisier and noisier.

Obviously I'm agreeable to putting up with a few days a year for vintage car races, because I wouldn't want them altered.

But I see no reason why moderm cars have to be too loud. Everyone races under the same restrictions, and it ain't above todays technology to make them quiet, after all my BMW puts out 400bhp and you can hardly hear it. So why should I put up with a max boy who likes to take the baffles out of his nova to make it sound fast for the race?
