Is it possible to put yourself through train driver training

As the title really.
Like you can for a commercial pilot’s license, can you put yourself through the training required to be a train driver and then go into the ‘qualified talent pool’?
Trainee positions are nigh on impossible to get so I wondered if you could do that.

In a word, no
A vast majority of the training is classroom based with all sorts of tests etc, something that you would never be able to replicate. While you may be able to learn to drive a train if you had the use of one on a private line, that experience won't count towards main line experience.
