I came across this interesting story by accident, an interesting account of an event I did not know about.

I recall as a child regularly seeing Vulcans overhead when I lived in Tyneside but I do not recall this specific incident.

Interesting one, and a good video too.

There were so many crashes back then, that this probably wasn’t a stand-out event. Nobody even injured, so maybe not front page newsworthy compared to whatever else was happening?

Didn't know about this one as I'm far too young...

However I do remember the jets colliding over tyne Valley (early 90s I think) and part of one of them hitting the a68 bridge over the tyne at riding mill.

Tornado and Jaguar I think.

great vid there...

as an aside I was looking at the Vulcan cockpit and stumbled across this cache of photos (including Vulvan) which may be interesting.

I do recall that one, was living in Corbridge at the time - they came down in a field just off the A68/A69 roundabout.

...unrelated but on a professional level I did the survey for insurers on the house that was hit by the Hawk at Shap, the farmer had a very grim tale to tell about his field :-(

I think this is the crash which opens Vulcan 607 by Rowland White.

The next door neighbour to me when I was growing up was working at Heathrow Airport the day the Vulcan crashed there on its return from its demonstration trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Yes you're correct. I lived in Riding Mill then and remember it, albeit quite hazy as I was about 10.

Think one of them came down in the fields by the pumping station.

There were some Tornado collisions over the north sea about the same time too?
Something to do with the blue circle radar not being very effective

I don’t recall that at all. The Blue Circle radar wasn’t a thing by the time I arrived at Leeming in ‘88, and I ‘think’ Coningsby had fitted Foxhunter by then.

Blue circle, wasn't that just a lump of concrete used as ballast?

Called blue circle as a joke which was bought hook, line and sinker by the opposition. Probably just urban legend...

Maybe not:

It was definitely a thing. And some don’t realise it was a joke on two levels. Yep, there’s the cement company reference, but it also uses the U.K. method of naming military projects with a rainbow name (how forward thinking we’re they? Lol).

Thanks for posting that, although I no longer live there and by co-incidence was at the Scottish Museum of flight at the weekend during a rare visit, I remember this well.

I was at school in Peterlee and remember the noise of this aircraft as it passed overhead, much noisier than usual, followed by a loud bang. It was a maths lesson at the time and I remember the laconic Mr McGill, ex navy, saying 'well, he made a mess of that one'. I don't think he'd realised it had actually come down. One of the aircrew came down in our playing fields, landing awkwardly, and wasn't in great shape iirc. There was a big security operation in place pretty quickly and the word was that the plane had been carrying an "A-Bomb". True or not, no idea.
