Convertible myth, legend or truth?
Discussion
Sorry this could take a couple of paragraphs.
I purchased my first convertible just after the NEC show when the car was introduced. At the time you had a choice of a standard car or for the best part of 10k you could have the same car in S spec with full leather, uprated engine, A/C etc. this was very much an additional cost and was not included within the standard spec.
When NS standardised the engines IICR there were three colours black for the 3.6, blue for the 4.0 and red for the S spec engine?
I’ve been looking at buying another convertible recently and both have red cam covers. Mine was 100% blue, that’s what I paid for.
I’ve heard all sort of rumours about the convertible being produced on the same line as the sagaris hence the cam colour.
I visited the factory when my car was being built there did not seem to be an assembly line or hierarchy.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Are the convertibles likely to be S spec engines?
It would seem unlikely as I recall TVR saying at the time the convertible had a lower top speed to the targa. I guess this was to quash safety concerns

Well , I bought my convertible direct from the factory, ordered Jan'06 and took delivery on the 1st April'06. If you check my register and info thread

You will see the true specs, if you see one you want i'll e-mail you the customer spec sheet (if you have the build number)
The 1st were launched in Sep'05 as 4 litre or 4 litre 'S' ( the same engine as the Sag) ... In Dec-05 TVR offered the Sports Pack for £10k an extra package(incl. S engine, full leather, HID lights , CR Box etc.) ... although not many actually got a CR box and 4:91 Diff (I didn't ..I found out later) .
There were NO 3.6 convertibles .... in fact I was told last week from a good source .... MK2 Tuscans were only fitted with 3.6 engines , because they were for Tamoras (which didn't sell as well as expected)... So they put them in Tuscans and sold them cheaper than a 4 Litre.
You are correct about Nikolais idea to colour code the cam covers... however some people have repainted covers (so not guaranteed now)
