There really needs to be a series about the strategic bombing campaign in general, from all perspectives.

I was watching a documentary about the He-111 and it actually had a clip of a DC3 in D-Day stripes!

LANCASTER is very good and worth a watch.....

They touched on the Halifax and Stirling at the start and how the Lancaster came about...... Lot's about Bomber Harris and the night time bombing campaigns.....

Lot's of really old Pilots and Bombers...... They all looked in bloody good nick for over 90's

I watched this documentary over two nights and found it very interesting especially as I am ex RAF myself. Hearing some of the stories from the aircrew themselves was particularly good. The flying sequences with the BBMF Lancaster was also very good.

You’ll be disappointed watching it on a very small flight sized screen.
All but the period content is shot in letterbox format,
and the (4x3?) period content takes up the same height as the letterbox
and so it appears as a small rectangle in the centre of the screen.
Viewing in the cinema would be good !

I was also slightly disappointed in the content, I’ve heard more interesting descriptions
from ex-crew about what it was actually like to be part of a Lancaster crew, and their experiences and feelings of being on those raids.

The Jack currie books I mentioned earlier are brilliant-
He describes having a rookie bomb aimer for a raid on Berlin “ left a bit ,steady,right a bit ,I honestly thought he was going to say back a bit at one point!,then he said go around again!
We don’t go around again over Berlin,drop the bombs!”

He also describes how they got lost one night and landed at an RAF base in their Lancaster and taxied up to the control tower,and the navigator jumped out to ask where they were-only to be asked for his ID card-“ who do you think we are? The fking Luftewaffe?!”

To be honest, no. The problem is that virtually EVERY documentary on RAF heavy bombing more or less just talks about the Lancaster - and I've seen loads of documentaries on Lancasters. I've also read (and continue to read) lots of books and articles on Lancasters so I'm not sure if there's much else I'd learn from yet another documentary on the type.

I'd really love to see a well made doc on the Halifax or the Stirling. After all, many thousands of RAF bomber crew lost their lives flying these slightly less well known types. And they and the aeroplane deserve some recognition too. Same goes for the Stirling.

I have this DVD on the Halifax and it is excellent - but I don't think it's ever made it to any mainstream TV channel.

I sort of thought you hadn't as although the supplementary flying footage was Lanc and the crews were Lanc crews I thought it could really have been a documentary about any bomber crew, the descriptions of the bomb-aimers were particularly good.

Also worth finding a copy of 'Night Bombers' which was colour footage (partly used in Lancaster) filmed by the Station Commander of RAF Hemswell.

In Easingwold, Yorkshire. Jack Currie has his own named corner at the bar at The George Hotel. Aptly Called "Curries Corner"
