Hey all,
Not sure how many of you have seen this video already but this interview of Nigel by Jodie Kidd is really excellent and a great way to pass an hour.
Thanks for that. I'll give it a watch later. Not sure how many of you have seen this video already but this interview of Nigel by Jodie Kidd is really excellent and a great way to pass an hour.
I have great affection for Mansell. I was a fan the moment he started at Lotus. When I was in my early 20s, I'd set up a publishing business and had cause to do a little bit of business with him that required a trip to his home on the IoM. I was trying to be all professional but let slip I was a bit of a fan and he could not have been more gracious - showing me trophies, memorabilia and chatting about F1. What struck me then was that he was as interested in me as I was in him and I've found many 'celebs' where the former never applies.
The reason I was there was for him to sign a batch of prints, his fee for which was £7k. The cheque I had to have made out to the IoM Cancer Care charity.
When his lads were racing in British F3, he was at Brands with them and I went to say hello wondering if he would remember me. He did!
Top fella!

I often find Mansell interviews hard work, he is so difficult to like sometimes!! Might try this and see if she can get him to stop being so unnecessarily dramatic, especially when you know the truth behind a lot of his drama!!
To be honest that's the reason I absolutely love Mansell interviews! You simply cannot ignore his passion either, there's a reason he's been so successful in life. Also slightly odd that they didn't remember Barrichello's name. That moment suggested to me that maybe Jodie was winging it and not as knowledgeable about F1 as suggested. Every moment of that horrible Imola weekend is indelibly etched on most of our minds.
But overall yes a very good interview however as remarked Nige was on his best behaviour, those of us who've been around long enough have certainly seen the other side of his character too.
No question about how he's battled injuries that lesser drivers would have been seriously affected by, that fighting spirit was the essence of what made him such a fierce competitor.

He is a polarising character for sure.
We all as fans bought into it in the 80's and early 90's but since then after reading a lot about that era, you do get a different impression.
One thing is for sure, he remains loyal to the fans, is very well remembered by many, and for a man who fought a lot to get here he did, he certainly could beat anyone on his day something which even multiple world champions could never admit.
A Mansell charge was something to behold.
I just wish he was a little less dramatic and woe is me!!

Agree with all of that. Loved his driving but what turned me off was the footage in the 1991 FIA season review where he was effing and cursing his poor Williams mechanics at Imola, their faces were stunned. You could see on their faces "we work the hours we do for this st?"We all as fans bought into it in the 80's and early 90's but since then after reading a lot about that era, you do get a different impression.

Showed him in a very poor light. Subsequently that scene seems to have been removed from edits of the season review!

Winger.I haven’t seen the interview yet but a recent video of the Sotherby auction for Mansell’s ‘89 Donkey and FW14-taxi had plenty of blag.

Was interested in this until I saw the words “Jodie Kidd”.
Not for me, thanks even though I’m a big Mansell fan.
This was a nice lighthearted "interview" and very deferential and flattering to Nige glossing over some of the tougher bits. Not for me, thanks even though I’m a big Mansell fan.
I've met her a few times, she's very nice but very typical luvvie, air kisses, Surrey set. Nothing wrong with that as her channel is appealing to a wider demographic not hardcore F1 people.
She is a bit vacuous.
I was a big fan of Mansell, but don't like how he did the dirty on Williams over money. I was pleased the team didn't sign again him for 95, which judging by his Mclaren performances must count as a lucky escape.
Having said that, Silverstone 87 and 88 were utterly fantastic drives.

Did the dirty? IIRC Williams screwed him over in the past numerous times, despite him being a world champion and faster than almost anyone on the track, including Senna and Prost on numerous occasions - the only reason they wanted him in '94 was because Senna seat became available and Hill and Coulthard were making a meal over getting the title for the team in a far superior car over the Benneton of Schumacher - Mansell came back and made them both look ordinary , despite also racing in IndyCar at the same time... he won the last race for them. He wanted #1 spot at williams and a lot of cash, given he was a world champ , he probably deserved it, and looking at the 1995 season , williams would have won it with him in it. that '95 mclaren was a dog for everyone who drove it - the team still in disarray since Senna left and its engines manufacturer too....

I have a complete different recollection than you. No he wasn't quicker than Hill but did take pole due to others mistakes. Renault came up with a big amount of cash (not Williams) as they wanted the marketing value of having Mansell over Coulthard even if only for three races. I believe the amount was $3m.that '95 mclaren was a dog for everyone who drove it - the team still in disarray since Senna left and its engines manufacturer too....
He did win Australia but there was quite a big event during that race which you may recall. If they hadn't crashed Nigel wouldn't have won that race.
He certainly didn't do badly in those races but if you watch them Hill was always quicker.
He had to sit out the start of the season at McLaren because his arse was too big to get in the car.
When he did finally get in the car after they redesigned it to make the chassis wider there was ill feeling on both sides so they called it a day. It wasn't a winning car but Hakkinen did ok if you look at the results. Two 2nd places and when the car was reliable he scored good points. Blundell did too.

And the Williams was not a quicker car in 94 by any means. Especially as the Benetton had traction control.
Damon was helped by the races MS had to miss but I think it was by far his best season and he really stepped up after Senna's death. To catch up by the last round was quite an achievement. Maybe you missed Damon in Japan, probably his best race in F1 and Schumacher had no answer to him that day.

Mansell won and got poles being slower than drivers who have driven and tuned the car all season? Huh? As I said hill and Coulthard were ordinary.
The McLaren had been designed for another driver because they thought they wouldn't have a Mansell option. I believe malborough paid 10 million for him to join at the last minute. But it doesn't take away from the fact the car was no where near a championship winning for years nor even race winning car for Mansell...

I agree- Hill's 94 season was outstanding, given everything that happened and the team's lack of faith in him (shown by the signing of Mansell). Japan 94 was Hill's best race imo.Damon was helped by the races MS had to miss but I think it was by far his best season and he really stepped up after Senna's death.
