What car?

I have a max budget of £40k however nearer £20k would be better. I am looking for a 'family' car that can hold 2 adults and 2 x 3 yr old children as well as a small dog. We previously had a Discovery Sport however that has recently been sold, I am quite keen on an estate as I feel that we can get a lot more for our money however my wife wants another SUV. I would like automatic, less than 50k miles and reasonably practical. I am currently thinking 5 series whereas my wife would like an X5, same with other brands/models. Any suggestions?

Practical, sensible transport from the cheaper end of the VW range.

Petrol at £2 a litre ? No problem when you are getting 50-55 mpg. £30 annual tax too.

Passat is similar but more expensive and I am sure Audi do something similar but even
more expensive, but with much shiny tat in the cabin.

We ran a VW Touran for over 7 years, rock solid 80k miles in our ownership, loads of flexibility with seating and in between an estate and SUV for seating position. Buttons to run and loads of car for £20k. It’s not going to set the world alight, but does what it should, very well.

I have a current model 520d touring and it’s epic..100k miles so far and just one failed boost sensor.

Comfy, economical, dog likes it…. Just brilliant couldn’t recommend enough- lovely drive too

When spending 30k or so the depreciation is going to be worse than the difference of mpg unless you do mega miles/10 mpg car!

If you then want, go to Birds and spend £5k on your M140 on their suspension and diff upgrade. Done.
