Is your word your bond?
Discussion
Well is it?
The thought behind this question is quite simple. I had just agreed to sell my house. It was quite a difficult negotiation as I was away at Spa over the weekend and had to spend a fortune in mobile calls.
Added to this the Buyers wanted to move within 3-4 weeks. As a result my ex had cancelled a load of plans and spent the entire weekend looking at houses settling on one in particular for which there was no chain, to fit in with our buyers. I have spent hours on the net and making calls to people I know to sort myself out and had a chainless property ready.
Then I get a call a short time ago to say that our Buyers had withdrawn. Turns out they had put offers in on a number of other properties and one of them had said they would move in with relatives immediately, so they were going to go with them
:ranting:
Now it’s not the £100 or so that I have spent on buying things etc that I could have got for free if I’d had a little more time that bugs me. Nor it is the wasted time my ex and I have spent rushing around to accommodate. Nor is it the wasted time of the agents and other sellers (although that does niggle a little). In fact I can even smooth over the fact that they have added further upset to ex’s kids who will obviously be upset with all this stop-start-stop etc on top of us splitting.
No, what really annoys me to the point even I cannot find the right swear words is that these people a) lied to me, and b) broke their word.
I do not say I’ll do something that I know others will rely on only to go back on it a few days later, not when it is important. In fact about the closest I would ever get to it would be to cry off going out for a beer or something relatively insignificant like that.

It's a bum world, full of devious bastids, isn't it? I've even come across a judge who lied in an affidavit.
What makes things worse is the fact that your buyer's solicitor (probably) would have told him it's ok to shaft you right up the trigger point.
Gladly, there are still some of us who wouldn't sink so low.

Happily I know this is not the case.

and I have no intention of letting people who would sink that low ever dragging me down to their level After 25 years working in commercial estate agency, I long ago learned that property brings out the worst in people for reasons that I still cannot pin down. I believe nothing I am told, expect nothing to happen and never hold my breath that a deal is going to be done until contracts have actually been exchanged.
You can only live by your own standards...unfortunately not everyone has the same principles and this may let you down.
For me, word/bond absolutely...having worked as a city/wall street bond trader for many years...over the phone purchases or sales of silly numbers with many zeros after them are always backed up...reputations are made on this...as soon as you let someone down then you are finished...a shame people can't act the same in the real world

Tell me about it. This feeling is magnified 1000+ fold when a so-called close friend weaves a web of lies and deceit. The pain of betrayal is gut wrenching. And he used to say stuff like "my word is my bond...etc". Spineless loser. Experiences like this cripple your ability to trust people.

So called best friend in my case. I still can't talk about the details but he ruined my life.
I was recently told (at a party) that he had had brain surgery and nearly died. I nearly got beaten up by his mates coz I
Even more recently he was caught cheating on his wife and was thrown out of their house.
Guy is vermin.
