Profile change tyre question 215/70 15 v 225/65/15
Discussion
I am hoping someone on here is a tyre expert and can advise.
I have a classic car which has 215/70/15 tyres on it. I am going to fit a new set as the garage who refurbished the wheels lost the tyres and are buying a new set.
the original tyres were W speed rated, but are now only available from Pirelli in P5 form. Although new compounds it is an old design and construction. It was launched in 1977.
Most 215/70 tyres are H speed rated.
as i drive my classic cars I would prefer a modern designed tyres such as the Yokohama 0056 etc. Whilst designed for SUV's there are a few models which are more road orientated in that family.
I was thinking of going for 225/65 as opposed to 215/70. It is .4 of an inch wider which the car arches can handle.
can anyone explain what difference that might be to handling ride etc. I am old enough to remember the introduction of the P6 /P7 and how that totally revolutionised car handling.
I can not go up a wheel size to 16 which would solve the issue and must keep the 15 wheels. I had changed from 15 to 16 on my past 308GT4 and the difference was amazing.
Any expertise and views would be appreciated.

Generically the move to lower profile tyres will "sharpen" the handling a little & may result in a slightly firmer ride.
The difference between those sizes is small, so it won't be massive, however the overall smaller rolling radius will mean the speedo may be inaccurate.
"tyresizecalculator" suggests the difference will be around 2% lower speedo reading than stock size.
