Hi-fi, but from the 1930s...

A family friend has 'about 1,000' 78 records that need to go, and I've been asked if I have any bright ideas. They have sentimental value so she doesn't just want to bin them.

I imagine most will be worthless, but there may be some gems. One is signed by a famous singer from the 1930s, for example. Unfortunately I'm not able to distinguish them. What would be the best place to go to (a) work out which have value (b) sell them? Is there a collector's scene for 78s?

In my limited experience, 'pop' '78's are the most valuable - closely followed by blues and jazz.

A fairly big job to catalogue and value that collection.

It is... the owner isn't up to it, my cousin doesn't have the time and I wouldn't get any of the proceeds so lack the motivation...!

Thanks for the link.

I recent got rid of quite a few albums / 78s
I did a bit of research (discogs etc)
I took the lot to a record dealer in an out of town place where there were quirky shops. He took the lot for a decent price to me. A profit for him, but I got rid in one hit..

78s from the mid/late 1950s when vinyl 45s were coming in , Elvis, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry,
they might be worth something.

If you’re not aware they will weigh an absolute ton and moving that many isn’t trivial!

From what I hear these are interwar/1940s.

Yes. It would be a massive amount of work and I have no incentive to take it on. The lady in question doesn't do the internet, which makes it even harder. I think I'll have to step away from this one.
