V8 SUVs - SVR Vs M50i - owner experience?

I posted on here a couple of months ago (https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=&t=1983518) about used car options.

Since when fuel has gone to £2/litre...but I'm seeing that as a reason TO buy a V8 whilst we still can.

I only do c5k per year, so the fuel has minimal impact on running costs but starting to have a decent dent on used values.


I think I've narrowed it to 2 unlikely competing options. An F-Pace SVR or an X5 (maybe X6) M50i. Both 500bhp+ V8, one a bit more brazen, they other a little more subdued.


Both drive really well, the SVR edges it as a driver's car (as much as a 2-tone SUV ever could be), but X5 has a greater quality feel.


Has anyone had experience of either from an ownership experience?

I’ve got a MY22 F-Pace SVR. It’s awesome.

What exactly do you want to know about it?

Its our only car and as a one car household it needs to do everything. It’s averaging 19mpg with mainly short journeys over 7000 miles (my wife keeps the average high, I usually get about 15mpg). Doesn’t seem to be eating brakes or tyres too badly. It sounds incredible with the valves locked open. It’s comfortable. It handles well. It can do civilised driving, it can do hooligan driving. It’s just about big enough for a family of four and all the luggage and gear for a week away at the coast (only just!). The interior is lovely and the seats are comfortable. It’s fast and has four shiny exhaust pipes. It’s a V8 with a supercharger whine.

I haven’t a bad word to say about it, but it’s a JLR car so that could literally change tomorrow if it decided to do the standard JLR ‘thing’ and break.

To be fair I got it last summer when you could still get 10+ per cent off them. Think I paid £73k or something on a £82k spec car. They’re now £86k with very little discount.

I didn’t even go and look at the BMW because, well, they’re hideous and sound rubbish. And the same spec Porsche was twice the price. I would order another again in a heartbeat.

Edit: Mpg on a 70mph run is usually about 28-30. Which is ok, I suppose.

Got a X5 m50d . its got huge torque without having to rev it , with "only" 400 bhp and it can feel as if that power level is getting beyond the chassis , tyres limit in the dry (22" wheels) . I cant help feeling that more bhp with less torque might be a bit frightening LOL

I know you said fuel economy is not important but "d" gives 700 plus mile range and up to 50mpg but not if you gun it !

PS came to X5 from full size range rover and X5 is far more stable over undulating twisty roads .

I don't have either of those but have you considered a GLS63? I've had a '21 model since new and it's fantastic. 600hp, super comfortable, though not as nice as a proper S class, and all the toys you could want. Loads of room as you'd expect, and it's perfect for family trips or, dare I say it, the school run.

Now I'm not sure what your budget is but if you want a V8 SUV then I'd say get the V8 SUV

I've had quite a bit of experience with these & they're something special, as an alternative there's it Italian (slower) cousin, both have a 5 year manufactures warranty, which can be extended in two years time.
