My go-to guy on employment matters is away at the moment so hoping someone might be able to help.....

I'm looking to give a recent graduate a bit of work experience. This will be ad-hoc on an as-needed basis for which they will get paid. Most likely less than 20 hours a month.

I think this would fall under either Casual Work or Freelance.

What's the best way to do this?

Put him on the payroll on a zero-hours contract.

If you're not registered as an Employer than find a local recruitment agency, and tell them you want to employ the graduate via them. They'll charge between 15-35% commission, plus VAT but they'll do all the HMRC admin.

Or use the ESF European Social Fund to get minimum wage for 6 months you can top up if you wish. I’ve just done this with a marketing grad.
