Ferraris and Lamborghinis might be the reason the EU waters down a key element of the climate agenda: phasing out the combustion engine by 2035. Italy is among a number of countries pushing for a five-year delay. The issue sets up what will be a tough day of negotiations for EU environment ministers as they seek agreement on crucial pillars of the bloc’s landmark climate regulation. France, in the final days of its EU presidency, is looking to get a signoff that will open the way for talks with the European Parliament later this year. Beyond cars, disagreements are likely to focus on protection for the region’s poorest citizens. The amount of money being made available to help shield consumers from the economic impacts of the transition is being hotly contested, so expect talks to potentially drag into the night.

Predictably Germany also oppose the ban

Seems they’re not as green as they’d like you to think.

I'd love to know that, since the years where buying diesels was heavily incentivised and encouraged by governments, how much damage was caused to the earth in comparison to encouraging development of petrol tech.

Not only do relatively few supercars get made, the mileage the cover is far, far below average. I can therefore understand why supercar manufacturers feel unfairly included.

What the planet would like best is the removal of humans

Best of both worlds, hopefully.

This way we get to keep the more sensational vehicles and hopefully promote synthetic fuels to keep classics going in a carbon-neutral way.

Regardless of the above, I do think EVs will simply be better transport for the majority of people and EVs will still naturally become the majority of ordinary cars.

Therefore, the delay or suspension of the ban will have minimal environmental impact.

Of course, environmental stuff is all about the optics...

The question is where one draws the line. The problem here isn't supercars, not even Ferraris. The problem is the Porsche 911. There are so very many of these, which is why Lindner, a neoliberal Porsche driver, is currently risking bringing down the German government by advocating for synthetic-fuel ICEs, never mind the massive inefficiency of hydrogen production.

This, need to seriously look at the number of people on the planet.

I don't have an answer, but reducing the population automatically reduces pollution.

With regards to supercars, if I was in charge, if you made less than X cars per year, you should be allowed to continue as they really don't contribute to global warming in any meaningful way.

Well if we’re going to think really big, humans will make no meaningful difference to the planet long term.

The Earth has been hotter, it’s been colder etc. When we say ‘save the planet’ what we really mean is ‘save humanity - make sure we can grow food, make sure we have water, and mobility and our coastal towns don’t flood and that my taxes aren’t too high and I can have a smart phone’.

The Earth will be fine. Humans will been seen as a blip that turned up, ran amock due to having no natural predators, were smart enough to thrive unchecked but not smart or strategic enough to survive long term. Sorry to sound all fatalistic, but we’ll burn bright but for a short time cosmically speaking. Here and gone in a blink.

The Earth will be fine and just reinvent itself for the next chapter.

Just imo of course smile

This.

Homo sapiens have only been around for about 300k years. Species that resembled "humans" have only been pottering about for about two million years.

Dinosaurs wandered about the earth for circa 160million years.

I'd be amazed if homo sapiens make it to half a million yrs in all honesty. Not even worth noting down in the history books! hehe

Excellent. That goes some way to making amends for some of their F1 nonsense over the years. It's unlikely I'll ever be in a position to vote with my money and buy one.

Get rid of engines in cars but I can’t imagine the emissions from the cars is anything like ships and planes. But let’s get rid of cars and that should solve everything.
I think they should get rid of private jets, get rid of 1st class on planes and they’d fit more people in. I’m sure that would never happen as they don’t want to upset the rich.

Those massive container ships. The humongous ones.

14 of those is about equal to all the cars in the world...

Cruise ships get my vote to be banned - hateful things. Why anyone would want to go on a cruise is beyond me.
