2003 Golf R32?

A friend of mine is selling his Golf R32.
2003, 89K miles, service history, recent full service / haldex service.
New radiator recently fitted. Rear pads recently fitted. Full years MOT.
Has also been detailed and ceramic coated.
Last time i drove it, there was juddering under very heavy braking, so i suspect it needs front discs which arent cheap apparently. Only other mark on the entire car is a small scuff on one alloy.
£10K is the price.
3 door, black, black leather, seems to have the proper R32 wingback type seats also. Totally standard.
Very tempted by it. It feels like a car i could buy, do the discs and pads, get the alloy sorted then have a bit of fun with for a year or so then sell on and at least return my money. People seem to be asking a lot more for these, though asking and getting is two different things.
We've a M140i as a daily, and a Z4 coupe as a weekend car. Both get very little driving but i do enjoy owning them.
I guess really what am asking is - is this a "Dear God get it bought!" type buy or "Yes that would be a bit of fun to own" or "Why are you even considering this as its a dumb idea"?

Yes. That is probably one of my concerns also. Theres a couple for sale here in NI and they're just sitting there not selling (though granted one is a high miler and the other is a roughish looking five door), but they are very slow sellers.Problem with these cars is everyone is shouting from the rooftop about how prices are rising but when you actually try to sell it on it may prove difficult.
Hes had "a lot of interest" in it from friends and friends of friends, but noone has put their hand up at £10K for it and he is firm on the price.
Sorting out the discs and pads, the alloy (which as the rest of the car is perfect, would annoy me), and i'm sure theres maybe a couple of small things it might need would probably add +£1,000 to the price of it.
Had one. Hardly drove it. Personally I think it’s an overhyped car but if you’re part of the cult following then each to their own. Good precaution to replace the water pump the same time as the belt. Price seems a bit high to me, I’d push for under 10k though. Cars like that though. If you know the owner and they can vouch for the history then that counts for a lot. Why is your mate parting with it? Can you see yourself driving one of these? If you’re trying to scratch an itch..

That is totally where the (ex) motor trader part of me is on it.Logically it feels like a no lose situation.

Agreed. The do attract a certain following. It does feel like a car i could buy, see how i feel about it, then sell it on if i didnt bond with it for no loss.I'll not get speaking to the guy again until monday but i'll put him over what service history there is with it, when / if the belts and water pump were done and what evidence there is around the haldex service work, etc.
He has a load of cars around him, but they sometimes have some wee niggling fault that he hasnt bothered fixing, so i'd really need to go over this with a fine tooth comb.
I've bought cars off him before and the five minutes after you pay him is the longest five mins of your life. Theres usually a "oh, i meant to say to you... " moment, so i'll need to press him before i buy.

Oops. On the plus side my missus wont equate a 2003 Golf with £10K of spend, so the distain for the purchase might not last too long.
Not helped by the fact she hates Golfs.
Will see how my due diligence pans out on monday.

Yes, i think thats a real risk. The ones that sit seem to be ropey ones or stupidly priced ones (or ropey, stupidly priced ones), but thats now and there is no future guarantee, as you say. That could be very hard to shift down the line. But then its only ever going to be a weekend car now really for someone, so the fuelling of it isnt such an issue, and its pre March 2006 so not a horror to tax.Just be conscious that in todays market nothing is a given, you may not be able to sell it on again quickly If you don't like it, so as long as you are prepared for that then go for it!
