It has a long and illustrious history and has plenty of culture .. in many ways far more than most other cities

It’s culture might not be the same as Sevenoaks but it’s certainly rich in it

They gave it to Liverpool so I guess it's open season.

Could be great for the area.

Bradford has some fabulous places in and around the area (which is huge) and has lots of culture including a world heritage site not far from the city.

Splitting hairs: Liverpool was European Capital of Culture, as was Glasgow... it's a slightly different thing.

But your point stands: former UK Cities of Culture are Londonderry, Hull and Coventry, so if that doesn't tell you that the title is actually a euphemism for "sthole that needs a bit of a leg up for economic regeneration this year", then I don't know what does.

Good.

It was once a world city, now well past its glory days, that desperately needs a lift.

We'll get the usual jibes, barely concealed racism and such, but it's an interesting place. The social and political history is fascinating and yes, it has birthed or been home to an array of cultural movements and individuals.

It has been in the shadow of Leeds for too long and has been on the back foot for decades.

Yes, born in Thornton (just down from Simmonite's Land Rover), father's first church was there. Moved to Howarth a few years later.

It’s puzzling how there never seems to be a city of culture down south…

Had many a good night in Rios, was more of a Tumblers person though.

hehe

Northerner here, this needs no explanation.
Southampton was on the shortlist (along with Wrexham, co Durham) and it can be said there are plenty of cultists living there.

I've never heard of Londonderry, and I grew up there, don't fight me on that. City of culture status wasn't a patch on getting the fleadh which many culchies tried to block but obviously I don't know what I'm talking about and am just a thicko derry man.. There's nothing wrong with suggesting some places need a bit of economic regeneration but there's a hell of a lot wrong with suggesting they should complete in a beauty contest for it. Sorry for being a bit serious as I'm enjoying the frivolity.

A significant chunk of Liverpool had world heritage status so perhaps a bit more understandable than Bradford.

However poor you are in Bradford, you need never be walled in, bricked up, as folk must be in London. Those great bare heights, with a purity of sky above and behind them, are always there, waiting for you. And not very far beyond them, the authentic dale country begins. There is no better country in England.

Another of Bradford’s literary greats JB Priestley

Bradford has a world heritage site in Saltaire. The David Hockney museum is also situated there.
