My car is a 3 year old 420i.

This is one of my thinnest rear looking from the outside. No warning light so far yet. My recent MOT flag my pad worn between 1.6mm-3mm, but I still got a pass, so I am not sure what exactly that means. But technician said i should get roughly 5000 miles left if I rmb that correctly. I run another 1000miles after that.

The thing is, I will have a relatively long drive next week, like 500miles return trip form UK to Belgium and as far as I notice this, I don’t have enough time to get this replaced unless I squeezed it hard. I don’t wasn’t to brag about this, but any experienced fellow can shed some light on this - if I must get this change between my long trip next week? Dangerously need replacing or still can wait after my trip…? And I would say I am a relatively modest driver, most of time on eco mode and motorway gliding…
Thanks…

Does not your car OBC tell you?

That’s about half the new thickness, possibly a bit less.

It all really depends on how you use the brakes - it would probably not survive 100 miles on a track, but 1000 motorway miles would be fine. As it is on the back, it does very little, so it could easily do another 5k miles.

They'll do that, and 500 more.

I am sure it does but it is very unreliable as it is just an algortythm based on usage.

For mainly motorway and/or gentle use there could be at least 10k miles left in there.

The problem with leaving them too thin and waiting for the pad indicator is that as the material gets thinner there is a higher chance of it just breaking up from the pad with serious consequences for safety but also damage to discs.

But there is still life on that for sure just be careful.

biggrin

More seriously, there's loads of life in those yet. Do the trip and worry about them when you get back - unless you're doing a few laps of Spa while you're there, I'll bet you won't be able to tell the difference when you get back.

The same as any advice on this thread, then. Those will do another 100000 miles if you don't use the brakes and disable the DSC.
They'd last 10 miles with me doing brake testing on them.

Unless its 500 miles on track youll be absolutely fine. Id assume most of that would be motorway where youll not be braking much anyway.

Not necessarily, with the new braking systems they can use the rear brakes on cornering to help

It’s called active brake force distribution or such like, and is standard/optional on a lot of BMW cars

I had an X1 23d with it and it would eat rear brakes

I said I’m planning to replace them soon, but I just want to make sure the current status is still good to go… for at least a trip and i want to get a less dusty one as well and I don’t even know what should I go. Still kinda new to own a BMW.

I think at some point my car will. I heard by then this will be too late … and I just want to make sure this won’t during my trip.

How many miles does the car say before replacement, that will at least give you a guide.

Thanks, good to know that. Then I will have plenty of time sourcing for a less dusty brake pad…. these OEM are just pain in the ass in terms of cleanliness….

I hope this is just usual MOT thing made me a bit panic about it… just want to confirm to be on a safe side.

I am fully aware of that… this is just happen to be my first time to own a car long enough and the brake pads start to worry me ….

if you don't want to look at what the car tells you I would go with the technician who has seen them rather than some random blokes looking at a photo on the internet.

Plus only you know how hard you are on your brakes so any guesses given on here could be completely wrong smile
