Once upon a time we had Murray Walker and James Hunt. Then as coverage increased more “authorities“ got involved with their knowledge and views.

I like Martin Brundle and the other ex F1 drivers who’ve got involved. Sometimes they’ve got the short straw who they have to work with.

David Coultard and Mark Webber have to put up with the cringeworthy comments of Steve Jones on Channel 4.

Jolyon Palmer has to put up with complete crap on the F1 channel’s BBC radio commentary from guys who have to fill air time with whatever they can think of when there’s a Safety Car or similar holdup. Not an easy job but you’d think they would have prerecorded items to slot in.

Do the broadcasters think that their viewers or listeners appreciate moronic comments or is it supposed to be funny? The jester and the straight guy.

As David Coulthard is a co-founder of Whisper, the production company that provides C4 the F1 coverage, he probably has a say in Steve Jones' employment.

I liked Murray and Hunt, then I liked Murray and Brundle even more. Since then, it hasn’t been so good

being honest, can you imagine having to talk about f1 as it is now for 2 hours?

I know i would not want to, I think Croft does a marvellous job making an utterly average sport and possibly the least exciting motorsport around right now sound exciting.

He is useless yes, but trying to make f1 sound great right now is tough, it has its moments, and he loses the room when it does, but the rest of the time it is not a great thing to talk about.

I’ve watched the last couple of GPs on Sports Channel 4 in Portugal - courtesy of SKY seemingly detecting and negating my VPN set up.

My Portuguese is rudimentary but there is something satisfying about looking at tyre choices and watching the timing screen to suss out yourself as to how the race is unfolding.

The commentators are all fundamentally “good” - even Jonathan “around the corner he comes and onto the straight “ Legard was a competent broadcaster (he just didn’t understand F1).

As an experiment at Monaco turn the sound down and try providing a coherent flowing commentary for even a couple of laps….

Commentary is always better with ex drivers or those who really love the sport. In FP sessions when we've had Jenson, Nico, etc it's been great and the insight has been really useful. If Crofty said something wrong they'd pick him up on it. The best it's been in recent times was DC and Brundle in 2010. 4+hrs of Canada and Vettel spinning for Jenson to get the win I'll never forget.

Crofty winds me up and I could write loads on how bad he is. But so many of the young fans love him because that's all they've heard. Still regularly see someone posting the video of him screaming "AND HERE COMES SEBASTIAN VETTEL!" at Spa a few years ago.

As for broadcast before and after the race I not too bothered. It's the same inane questions anyway. At least Steve Jones will throw in something random to catch drivers off guard which is probably nice for them too. Both C4 and Sky have done some decent interviews. The recent one with George I watched yesterday and was pretty good and felt more real if that makes sense. The only thing I would say is both sides don't hide their bias. C4 with DC are pro Red Bull, Sky try their best to make all the excuses for Lewis, forgetting George has done a great job all year and not scored outside of top 5 yet. Both sides could do with a refresh. Even Ted's notebook, which I used to enjoy has gone stale

Nothing will ever top Murray for me, he always just came across as someone who was genuinely passionate and excited about what he was watching. Admittedly he had more to work with - it wasn't as if the racing was actually closer in those days, but the chances of someone blowing up or driving into a wall at any given moment were a lot higher.

I know the circus was smaller back then, but Murray always seemed like an integral part of the paddock. He understood the drivers and they respected him. Mansell, Hill - there was a real affinity.

Maybe it’s not the commentary these days but the whole set up…

Likewise. A fan first, everything else after that.

But, had the internet been a thing in his day, I'm 100% confident we'd have seen no end of 'Murray has to go' threads.

So much seems to be for the first time viewer who appreciates silly banter. Personally I find Steve Jones embarrassing with his cringeworthy comments but if David Coultard is involved in his appointment then somewhere they are looking to appeal to the idiots. Bit like Vernon Kay in Formula E. Surely there are enough motorsport experienced commentators who can talk the sport. Age doesn’t need to be the barrier. Look at Louise Goodman who has done some F1.
I see also that there is a new female presenter who has come in from W Series. She seems to know her motorsport. Good choice.

Murray was a tank commander in the war then had some high flying job in the advertising world. So no idiot.
He must have thought the general viewing public were idiots though as he never explained anything in depth.
I think you were meant to go away and find all that out yourself in a pre internet world.
They sort of follow his lead now as you can tie yourself in knots blathering on about something that will raise more questions
than it answers.
