As great as this vid is for racing, is there any commentary better than that of Murray Walker? The enthusiasm and expression he had is unrivalled. What an incredible time for motorsport and what a phenomenal commentator he was

Mike Raymond was certainly an equal to Murray Walker when it came to Australian Motorsports, often with his sidekick Garry Wilkinson.

IIRC, one year Murray Walker, Garry Wilkinson and Mike Raymond all shared commentary duties for ‘THE Great Race’.

Crikey - you back as far as I do. Raymond Baxter was very old school, and from memory , like many of his peers he'd refer to a driver being 'on' an ERA or whatever rather than the modern 'in'. A hangover from horse racing days , I guess, like 'paddock'.

Murray was a lovely chap . but the creme de la creme of commentators for me is Ian Titchmarsh , hugely informed and experienced and to be heard at race circuits most weekends . A true enthusiast -not that Murray wasn't one too ,

Titch is great, im happy with him, Mark Werrell or Marcus Pye at any of the clubbie events i do.

For an entire generation (possibly several), Murray Walker simply was (still is) motorsport. Gaffes and all (excuse me while I interrupt myself! ). Absolute legend.

They are both total pros , if a little lacking in Murray's legendary trouser on fire delivery , which worked so brilliantly on TV. I have sat and watched both Mark and Marcus at work in the commentary box and couldn't do what they do in a month of Sundays . I can remember watching Marcus commentate a race at Thruxton , and not only did he see bloody everything , he talked in quieter moments about a car' s history , while simultaneously watching the TSL live feed AND keeping his own lap chart .

I have no doubt Walker was a committed and knowledgeable commentator, but his nasal voice made it unlistenable for me.

Nasal ? Murray ? Shouty, loud, excitable and unmistakable but a well projected voice used to public speaking and anything but nasal . Bob Dylan , Kenneth Williams have/had nasal voices but Murray ? Never !
