If you want a new 540i now it would have to be a Touring. With a saloon you can only have a 545e or M550i.

Drive both because once you do that the answer will become clear.

Sounds like you need to buy an F90 M5 to me.

Underwhelmed with 600hp? It’s an absolute stealth machine.

You might be very underwhelmed with either choice you are suggesting then if the M5 didn’t impress you.

Good luck with what you choose.

If the M5 is too in your face then Alpina probably have the answer, provided you don't get the pinstripes.

What's the budget OP?

Thank you. The M5 is garish: and not for me.
Garish compared to an 8 series?

For me the 850 is the more special feeling out of the two, once you drive both your opinion may differ depending on your requirements.

Personally if you want something understated & special then I'd lookout for the Alpina B5:

Thanks, got a change to drive the 5 and 8. In the 8 the 840i was good, but the 850i is probably one of the nicest cars I’ve driven.

I just need to justify the price. The 850s are in the 70k bracket, so it’s a lot of money.
You don't need to justify it, if that's the car you want then that's all the justification you need. smile

840 OP

540 is just too dull and commonplace

Why?
Take it for a test drive and you’ll see why :-)
Much better option than the 540i.

I have a 540i and it's a wonderful thing, however if noise is your thing then you'll be disappointed. It's very muted although that's intentional. I had an M135i LCi before it and that was louder and more in your face. The 540i is good at being a 5 series if that makes sense. I think the pick of the bunch would be a 550i if you can get one. A bit more noise and drama, a huge increase in power (although mine never feels slow or lacking) but a bit less hardcore than the M5. It will do the 5 series thing and do it very very quickly.

Thanks. Im looking at the 850i now.
beautifully built car, stunning in the flesh. Has a lot of depreciating still to do!
