Which one shall i choose - opinions please

Hi all

After an opinion or two from fellow PH’ers.

I ordered a new Mustang GT convertible last July and here we are in May and I still don’t have it. My dealer has been chasing on a semi regular basis but could only offer apologies as build dates kept moving and moving. The last chat I had with him earlier this month was to say that he’d be surprised if I saw it before the end of Autumn. So I decided enough was enough and so as to enjoy a bit of roof down summer sunshine I decided to have a look around to see what else was about and last weekend bought a year old BMW 440i convertible. Yesterday I was going to call the Ford dealer but he beat me to it and unbelievably phoned to advise that he now has a VIN and I’m likely to have my Mustang in early August. Now I could say thanks but no thanks and get my deposit back (confirmed by Dealership) or I could sell the BM near to August and hope I get close to what I paid for it and go with my original choice of the Mustang. Just after opinions as to which option people think they would go with and before anyone comes back with any other comments etc I’d like to point out that there are only 2 options (for me) BM or Mustang

Personally I'd go for the Mustang. I've always preferred something ever so slightly out of the ordinary, you (I) see fewer Mustangs on the road than you would a slightly more common BMW (plenty 4 series I've only seen two Mustangs since launch) I've seen more McLarens... granted that was yesterday and saw five in a convoy heading in the opposite direction.

I hope it's not in black though, not a colour I think suites it, saw one (my second) last week, black body, black alloys, black leather, not a flattering colour on it to be honest.

so far so good, although i've only really done a handful of miles. It seems very competent, well put togerther and tons of kit.

thats what i was thinking (head vs heart kind of decision). i know the drive wont be as good and the kit not as plentiful but it is as you say slightly more unusual plus its a V8

no the order is for grey (with black wheels) i've had black cars in the past and loved them but they were all a pain to try to keep looking nice

I think think this is the right question to answer! Personally, if you're having to ask this question, it probably means you don't mind your BMW at all, and it might be worth keeping? Could the money be spent elsewhere on something nice?

Personal opinion which accounts for nothing, but I don't think the Mustang really works as a convertible.

I know that one, my last two cars have been black and I've sworn off the colour for cars simply because it was driving me crazy trying to keep them clean, my latest is a metallic gun metal grey. I'm always a heart sort when it comes to vehicles.

thanks all - i think that on reflection and assuming i get close to what i paid for the BM then i'm going to sell it late July / early August and go with the Mustang

Update: Call from Ford Dealer earlier this week and he had what he thought was good news, my car is at the Gate Release stage. However when pushed as to how they were going to still hit the August timeline for delivery to me (which is what he told me back in April) he admitted that it just wasnt going to be possible, he apologised and said it was possibly going to be late Sept but more likley early Oct before i actually had the car!

An October delivery puts me in a bit of a tricky position, you'll see from my last post that i was planning on selling my Convertible 440i round about now and then proceeding with the Mustang order, however that was on the basis that i wouldnt lose too much on the BM. Checking with places such as WBAC etc i'm already 'down' a bit against what i bought the BM for and a delivery in October will unfortunately mean that i stand to lose a lot (more) value in if i sell it then (vs selling it now in the summer when prices are understandably a lot higher). So now it looks as though i'm going to have to cancel my order and possibly lose the £500 deposit but that is (much) better than potentially losing several thousand on the sale of my BM.

just wondering if anyone knows whether i could possibly 'sell on' my mustang order?

I'd say no to the Mustang and buy a V8 Aston Martin for the same money. You should be able to find a lovely example of one for Mustang money and better still, it'll hold its value much better than a new Mustang will. And you still get the V8 noise...

I can imagine the running costs of the two will be very different despite the purchase price being similar, especially considering the Mustang will be under warranty and Ford servicing costs vs Aston Martin Servicing costs.

If I was in your position OP I would keep the BMW and leave the Mustang behind, I do like the look of the Mustangs myself but I think once the initial excitement wears off the BMW will be a better car.

Sell the BM now to cut your losses, buy a shed to get you to the Mustang delivery date.

Re: the Aston idea, whilst i'd love one i do need at least a bench type back seat (for the dog). As for selling the BM and running a shed, i had thought about that but my worry is that October becomes November etc etc* and i end up having to put up with an old shed for longer than i'd want to, plus i have a holiday booked in Cornwall for early Oct and i'd like something half decent to do the long journey in!

(* Ford's track record on my order has been abysmal, every single date they have ever given me has been missed and missed by a long way. )

Anyone any thoughts on whether i could sell on my order for a few quid and if so how?

What’s the cost of the mustang now compared to when you ordered ?

I’ve never known someone to sell an order, would the dealers allow it? Surely you’d need to take the car and then sell it on, which carry’s a substantial risk.

It’s over a year since I put the order in and the equivalent car now is just over £6k+ more than last year (Nb I have secured last years price)

Is the Ford really worth it? I do like the Mustang, but a Lexus RC F would also appeal. Shame about needing the rear seats as an F-Type 5.0 V8 would be lovely.
