Hey folks, thought I'd raise this off the back of the comments in the Miami GP thread. What do we think has happened to Danny Ric? I can't help but feel that his star has faded massively since the move to McLaren and Lando has made him look really quite poor.

All this is a shame as he's a likeable character and I definitely think he adds to F1, but I worry that he'll be out of a drive when his contract with McLaren ends.

Ricciardo has had problems adapting to different cars.

The Renault had a peculiar handling trait - confirmed by Hulk - that's been there for a number of years.

In the McLaren it's to do with the braking and carrying speed into the corner; Lando carries a lot of speed into the corner.

DR is kind of famous for also late braking and carrying a lot of speed into the corner too though.

That's not to say the car inspires the same level of confidence on the brakes he was used too previously I suppose.

I still think he's showing flashes of talent in the McLaren and will hopefully get back on top of his driving in a consistent way.

I’ve always been a fan of Daniel and am sorry he’s not getting the results he should be. He’s won races so , as with any driver, if the car is good he should be getting results.
Hamilton and Vettel are both champions but not getting the results and at times are overshadowed by their younger teammates. I don’t think it’s an age thing but have the more recent lower formula given different skills to those of the older drivers ?

I think it partly comes down to experience of top race cars/equipment and translated to different cars/teams and how it relates to their driving style and adaptation; unlearn and relearn.

The RBRs were perhaps the barometer of how a good car should be as well as suiting his driving style.

Another example is Kimi. It's been said peak Kimi were his McLaren years with the luxury of a tyre war the Michelins massively helped Kimi trail braking. Contrast the understeering 2006 McLaren and some of the 2010 Ferraris, Kimi was more confidant in the understeering McLaren.

After DR getting trounced by a very poorly Lando, surely his future at the team has to be in question now? It's a shame as I like DR, but unless he turns things around very soon I feel like his days in F1 are numbered.

To be fair, it was at Hashbrown Raceway, so only like 4 braking zones to worry about.

And I think the almighty kerfuffle with you-know-who and what's-his-face played a part too? Though I know he was already ahead at that point.

He did everything right that day and looked a good bet to win regardless of the MV/LH kerfuffle so all credit to him for that. It was an excellent performance. He did have a few good showings towards the back end of last season. Really thought it would take him into this year with a spring in his step but it's been pretty mediocre so far. Real shame. One of my favourite drivers and I'd love to see him back on form but it's been a while now...

I am a massive Danny Ric fan but given his performances this year I am worried about his future in the sport.

The fact that McLaren have now bought into Formula E, and have some promising young talent in their Indy team would give them scope to move DR out of his seat in F1.

I really hope we see an improvement in both the car and driver for the remainder of the season as he would be a big loss to F1.

Do you really think he would leave F1 rather than move to another team?

Who would you rather have in your car, Mick Schumacher or Danny Ricc? Obviously other factors to consider, but getting Magnusson back was the correct move for Hass.

Swap him with Colton Herta next season?

Lando beat him fair and square in the old, though new to Ric, car and he's in a different class to Ric this season in the new one.

Few can dislike Ric's character. But, I fear that his star is on the wane.

You have to wonder if he was ever really top level. He certainly showed moments of excellence but equally some of his dive-bomb moves didn't show a lot of finesse.

Or it could be that Lando is just a really top notch talent which is equally likely.

Ricciardo would have less money if he'd stayed at RB but certainly have more wins. He does seem very chummy with Max off track.

McLaren have made a very expensive mistake in my view, would be very interesting to see how Piastri performs alongside Lando.

Ricciardo seems like a lovely guy but at some point the jokes have to stop and the real business starts. Despite Lando being hardly able to walk in Spain, his trouncing of Ricciardo is a huge statement.

I said on here years ago he wasn’t as good as he marketed himself to be. And got slated for it. He is very good at self promotion with his smiles and good humour. But quite often that is a mask. Some of his true colours started to show through in the latest DtS.

The Redbull was a good car that gave him a few wins. But he’s not the kind of driver to drag an underperforming car up a few places.

He’s done very well for himself obviously, but he’s peaked. Getting soundly beaten by someone with tonsillitis is not a good look!

Absolutely, seems criminal that they are paying Riccardo $20 million a year when they have Piastri just sitting around idle and who would probably be happy to drive for free.

I would not be surprised if this is Riccardo's last year in F1 and McLaren get Piastri to drive next year instead. Lets be honest, they have a history of getting rid of drivers who under perform, just look at Stoffel Vandoorne, Kevin Magnussen, Sergio Perez, Heikki Kovalainen all gone when they couldn't produce the results.

And where does Riccardo go from here?

Ferrari or Mercedes = No Chance
Alpine, Red Bull and Alpha Tauri = I suspect he has pissed them all off, so no chance
Williams, Haas, Alpha Romeo = They want a driver who brings money with them, they are not going to pay $20 million

I think realistically the only option open to him is Aston Martin if Seb decides to call it a day this year.

I have always liked Ricciardo, but he has been overshadowed by Norris. In hindsight he probably regrets leaving RB.
It seems a no brainer to me for McLaren to go after Gasly for next year, who I think will push Lando much more. Daniel to Aston Martin, as I'm sure Vettel is retiring. Piastri to Alpine (if they decide Alonso needs to go) or WIlliams. McLaren aren't going to want to take on Herta or any other rookie.

His contract was for 3 years. I think ZB is a fairly pragmatic guy and unless something better comes along then I think they will keep him for next year. He can get some great results as we have seen last year finishing well into the top 10 most of the time and several top 5 finishes and a win in Italy.

That said if Seb retires I can see a few drivers moving round.

Danny ric is living off his previous 'wow' factor at red bull and as he is bankable..i mean more young fans know danny ric and i guess his smiley nature makes him more appealing..

My misses who has zero interest in F1 knows who danny ric is as she calls him the smiley guy. She only knows lewis and vettel and nobody else and bottas just because she finds his name funny
