Well, is he ?? Not seeing seeing much of Dad`s talents their, not the focus, the self centred hard bitten ,mean resolution, calculating every option & scenario, using every inch of his whit .

Good results in lower formula do not always count for everything , I`m not sure Mansell won anything in the lower levels, other examples I`m sure, but I digress,

The question stands.....

I asked this question just before his first season in F1. He won F2 through consistency without ever being spectacular in the way that some of his predecessors were, or Piastri last year. He has seemed competitive compared to his team mates so far in F1, but then given the quality of his team mates prior to this year, you would expect that. There are people in the paddock far better than me to judge though smile

K-Mag says he’s legit, I tend to believe him. Although apart from his great talent of causing total carnage, he didn’t really show anything this year. The car is easy top 10, now we just have to wait and see if he can score some points. I may be wrong but only him and Latifi didn’t score so far.
The fact that K-Mag is wiping the floor with him after 2 year on his couch is interesting to say the least

K-Mag has finished any expectations of greatness from Mick. A nice guy by all accounts, but not a top tier talent, when he is being blown away by someone who was considered a competent journeyman before being left without a seat from F1.

I think he's more of a Ralf (who was good, just not one of the greats).

K-Mag has a “nothing to lose” air about him this year, which I am enjoying, whereas Mick still has the burden of the Schumacher name.

But, I agree, it looks more like Ralph than Michael - especially for those of us who remember Michael’s first outing at Spa for Jordan GP.

That's roughly my view. He's okay, but not a future WDC.

So far I'm reminded of Bruno Senna. Before he moved to Lotus/Renault I had a chat with a senior engineer and they were expecting great things of him pretty much all based on his closeness in times to Button when he tested the Honda. As in Mick's case the HRT did not give any representative idea of his pace. The thinking was he'd be great in a more competitive car.

The move to Williams I felt was driven as much by the emotional bond Frank had to Ayrton as it was by pure pace.

As always the stopwatch does not lie. I hope he does improve but it looks like he's squandering his opportunities.

I've followed Mick through F3 and F2 and ROC, wrote last year off but was hoping for points finishes this season and so far very disappointing, Think any chance of a Ferrari seat has well and truly gone now.

Yeah I'd agree with the above. He's more Ralf than dad.

I also agree about Bruno. The name doesn't guarantee greatness.

A lot of people at Ferrari today worked with his Dad and there is also a very strong emotional and family connection there. In an ideal world for them Mick would have been alongside Leclerc in a couple of years.

I think Sainz getting a new contract tells us that is very unlikely now.

Agree. I think they were hoping for the German George Russell.

Yep, I cant see it happening now, best he can hope for is the testing role full time. Unless he suddenly finds form and gets points.

I think considering the burden upon him he is coping quite well...

I suspect in a year or two he will be a solid midfield driver but I don't think, unless we see a huge improvement he will be a WDC.

He is, as others are, taking a seat that could be taken by someone that is better suited. He is not F1 material IMHO.

Although I was not a fan of his father - because of his propensity to cheat when two options were apparent - Mick will never reach the amazing skills shown by the great Michael when he chose the sporting route.

On his day, Ralf was very good (ask Montoya), so I would go with more like Bruno Senna, than Ralf.

No.

Thread closed.

Now for the long answer: He’s obviously a capable driver, but is he F1 material? Debatable.

Is he top team material? Seems highly unlikely at this stage.

Will he ever win a championship? Well I suppose Leicester won the premiership, so crazy things do sometimes happen.

I would caveat this all with one point though. He has always needed two seasons to get used to a championship. This might be his second season in F1, but the rule change has reset everything. Maybe he’ll do better next season. Of course, the top drivers don’t need a year to acclimatise to a car.

George Russell didn't need one race. That's the scale of chasm between the two of them.

Same...

Perhaps not quite even that good, or maybe kmag is just way better than we thought or has taken particularly well to the car.

If Mick gets beaten soundly by him all year then that will leave his future looking pretty bleak. The name will still likely hold enough value to get him a seat somewhere low down if one opened up.
